Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

OK - so the Duke issue: I think we can all agree that it was pretty much the opposite of "typical". I'm going to guess that a large majority of rape accusations are warranted. So the school bet in favor of the odds and just happened to lose. Are you saying that they were correct in doing so?

I'm far from saying that they should take the Notre Dame approach, and have the school cover it up until the victim commits suicide. I guess I'm saying that the school really should remain neutral, which I think you said a post or two above the one I replied to. Something about pie.... and cooperating with Ringo.

What's even more interesting in the Duke case is that the accused were students and the accuser was not a student.

And yup... "This is a legal matter. Our institution is prepared to fully cooperate in the process as we are asked" is, in my opinion, the only acceptable response. No administrator, coach or anyone who speaks on behalf of an institution should air an opinion or make a statement on the matter until the legal proceedings are completed.

This enters into interesting territory in that so many coaches run their own show... and are largely allowed to in order to keep the stream rolling. I mean, what hot new coach like Herman or Frost would come to your school if they were going to constantly get censored at the pulpit?
On the other hand, the University needs to step in at some point, bring a lawyer into the conversation, and tell renegades like Briles to shut up and let the process play out. I always expect to see that feedback loop... where a coach will aggressively take his player's side... and the University leadership and legal office step in to reign that behavior back... but it's very rare.
Instead we get lawyer-as-Chancellor Ken "did you have sexual relations with that woman" Starr enabling rapists and silencing their victims.

Lotta ins and a lotta outs to that Duke case, man. Lotta strands in ol' Duker's head. Not only were they dealing with the details of the particular allegations, but it was in the unavoidable context of a whole lot of historical baggage as to how the institution, its founders and its entitled students interacted with the local African-American community throughout the decades. It was a shitshow just waiting to happen.

For sure. Was just talking last night about that. I didn't realize, until the (gasp) 30 for 30, that there was that much contention between the Dukers and the locals in RD. Make no mistake about it, those guys weren't alter boys, for sure. But there's a big difference between being an entitled rich kid who is arguably a part of one of the top two BMOC groups down there.

You're right... was waiting to happen.

Listen man, the letter clearly states there were no NCAA violations. Let’s focus on that, k?

They both get the same response.

NCAA members learn from each others' experiences.

Ohio State self-reports a myriad of minor violations and a few big ones surrounding JT/Pryor/Posey/etc. Gets slammed.

Cryami has boosters buying hookers and blow for recruits. Tells the NCAA to go fuck themselves. Gets basically nothing.

Pedsters allow child rape for decades, gets rightfully slammed.

MSU employs a rapist as a physical therapist or whatever he was (I don't feel like looking), tells the NCAA none of their bylaws were violated. Unless the pattern changes, they will get nothing or next to nothing.

I agree.
I haven't been following, but was he attached to the football team at all? Basketball team? I thought he was just working for the gymnastics team. I have no problem with the NCAA screwing the gymnastics team (not literally), but they shouldn't do anything to any teams he didn't work for.
