Michigan Coaching Speculation

Tom O'Brien - ACC - left a fully stocked Boston College for N.C. State last season.

Agree BKB, at least short term, I thought of this one, but being thinking- challenged, forgot BC's in the ACC now. Not sure this will be a good move long term either. NC St has some tough competition recruiting wise with UNC, unless Davis leaves UNC, and Clemson and S Car just over the border.

On a side note, I'm having trouble remembering any coaches who have moved inside a conference. Would this be unique ? (or am I just semi brain dead ?)
O'Brien from BC to NCSU (technically same confrence even if no one really thinks of BC as an ACC team yet).
Tuberville leaving Old Miss in a pine box for Auburn is a better example. He's about as popular in Oxford as you'd think.
Bobby Ross went from UMD to GT, but that had more to do with the fall out of Len Bias than anything else.
A number of PAC10 guys have coached multiple PAC10 school, but I think they all had pit stops at another school or the NFL between.

For the record, I trust Bill Martin to come up with a good quality coach, and I'd stand behind any selection - except a 110% ethically-challenged one such as Dennis Franchione, who seems to be available and would stay that way if I had a say. But hiring Kirk Ferentz would really test my faith in that regard. Other than a three-year stretch earlier this decade (out of his nine-year tenure), Ferentz hasn't distinguished himself at all.

I just don't think raiding the conference for your coach is ever a good idea. Michigan likes to promote from within, but I think you like to do that on a year when the coach has had a good year. Ron English had such a year last year, but this year it looked like the Michigan defense slipped backward. Same, same their OC.

Could be time to consider someone from Boise or Rutgers or how much you think it would take to move Rodriguiz from Morgantown to Ann Arbor? Don't tell me he wouldn't jump on it.

Totally agreed. If the buzz about the Ferentz hire turns out to be correct, I find it problematic.

Yep. Further, not a good idea to go that route when (I think, anyway) there's clearly some degree of dissent or strife amongst the coaching staff that has to be ironed out. Determinations have to be made (expeditiously, IMO) about which personnel will remain. Fresh leadership would best rectify that.

I've seen some fans clamoring for Schiano or Petersen, but I think that's largely based on their respective recent success rather than Bill Martin's criteria or whether or not they're the desired fit for the program /university. I'd be willing to entertain either based upon their merits, but I think the powers that be in Ann Arbor have different ideas.

As for Rich Rodriguez, he turned down a $12M six-year offer from Alabama just last December, and received a comfy extension (for a couple million less) at WV through 2014. Given that, I think he's interested in a great deal more than a paycheck -- he looks to be quite committed to his alma mater. Kudos to him if that's the case.

Its being reported by MgoBlog that KF may have accepted the job at UM.

Ummmmm, I smell bad blood and a fast call to the commish... that shit just doesn't happen in the Big 10 where university presidents have a very big say in athletics.

And Michigan, of all places. In 1939 Robert Hutchins, then president of Univeristy of Chicago went straight to the press with his reasons for ending football at the school stating, "You (Michigan) went out and bought a team..." among other things. Created quite a stir in academic circles for quite some time.

Does Delaney have any power over who Michigan's head coach is? For that matter, do other Big Ten university presidents have any power in this case?

Well, whichever it is Zurp, or not, the fact is that going direct from one Big Ten HC position to another Big Ten HC position would be very unusual, perhaps even unique in the history of the conference.

Zurp, unlike the SEC, university presidents have a good deal to say about the conference, they are on the Board. I know of no other instance where one school reached out to the other's HC and I think the Iowa president would have a caniption fit if Michigan got into his nest. Unless he wants to get rid of Ferentz... As for Ferentz, I'd guess that he missed his chance to get into a "Michigan type" job about two years ago when he might have been considered for Alabama, LSU, Florida or Notre Dame.
