Iowa's Kirk Ferentz offered Michigan job?

Brian at MGoBlue - who broke the Lloyd Carr retirement, btw ESPN -- has multiple sources confirming that Michigan has offered the head coaching position to current Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz.
I've sat on this a couple days waiting for some third-party corroboration and now I have it: Kirk Ferentz has been offered the Michigan job. The general feeling is he will turn it down out of fidelity to Iowa, in case you were thinking of making a late-night run to Ann Arbor (or Iowa City) Torch & Pitchfork. I do realize that this -- unlike the Lloyd thing -- is unlikely to ever be publicly acknowledged if Ferentz turns it down, but this comes from someone in a position to know, and how. The third-party corroboration comes from a couple Iowa insiders reporting things afoot that, unfortunately, I am not at liberty to disclose. Suffice it to say that Wednesday's post on Ferentz not making sense and this being a weird rumor is withdrawn: there's a real chance he's the next coach.

In a word - wow. Kirk Ferentz? I guess I fall into the 'didn't see that one coming crowd', much like Brian when he first got wind of it a few days ago and Mr. Tears & OT Losses.
Suffice to say, the Michigan fans are not happy.
I could understand if this were just a silly rumor - offering the UM job to one of the nation's highest paid coaches - to give Michigan more negotiating leverage with Miles... But, Brian says there's both smoke and fire, so....
While Ferentz may not necessarily make most Michigan fans go crazy in their pants, he has built Iowa into quite a nice little Big 10 program. That said, UM's aim isn't to be "a nice little Big 10 program".
I've never been a big Ferentz fan, but... then again, Ferentz accomplished plenty at Iowa... and if you can ramp up the Hawkeyes, then maybe he is worth every penny.
Be that as it may, Brian says Ferentz will likely say "TBNT" to a Michigan offer out of loyalty to Iowa. If it all plays out as expected and Ferentz says no, then Michigan still needs to find a coach.
So who's next on the Wolverines wish list? Perhaps Cincinnati's Brian Kelly. Rumor has it that Michigan has been background checking Kelly (and Notre Dame may be looking at him, too. Perhaps as an OC for Charlie Choo-Choo?)

Would Kelly be interested? Well, he artfully dodged the question this week.
"From my standpoint, it's similar to all the questions relative to the bowl games," Kelly said Monday during the Big East's weekly coaches' conference call. "Our focus is on Syracuse. That's the most important thing. Any speculation relative to bowls and jobs, we've got plenty of time for that after the Syracuse game (Saturday). "The focus for me and my football team is going to be on getting nine wins for the first time since the 1950s. Job speculation and all those things, we've got plenty of time to do that after this weekend."

So... Ferentz, then... Kelly? ... then Miles?
Honestly, I have no idea, but I do know this... stay tuned at MGoBlog, because Brian is tuned in right now. (Or just wait a few days later for ESPN to "break" the story without crediting MGoBlog... again.)

Iowa is a sinking ship, he's under the microscope there, he won't fire his assistants no matter how badly the alumni want him to. He'll take the minor pay cut, come to Michigan, be with his kids and get a fresh start. He's our next coach.[/FONT]

Ah, the ironic mind of the Michigan man.....

Sinking ship? Well... who's fault is that? Say... the HC?
Under the microscope at Iowa? Seriously? The microscope of Iowa? As compared to Ann Arbor? Iowa's the microscope? :slappy:

I hope the guy is right, though. Nothing says "Change the direction of the program" like 6-6

I thought it was more the part about his Mich ties and where his kids go to school more than the program at Iowa.
But like the first article says , he probably will turn it down , But why would he when he can go to Mich?

On the other hand iyt's not like the scum program isn't sinking either .

If Ferentz was to take the UM job, I am really curious as to see who he would bring in as his coordinators. Parker has been his DC at Iowa, but will he keep English (great recruiter, I still think the jury is out regarding his DC abilities)? O'Keefe was catching a little heat in Iowa City, is there much difference between him and DeBord? Guess I'm just wondering how many of the "Michigan Men" will still be around after the hire (even if it's not Ferentz). Don't forget, English was ready to leave to the pros prior to being named DC. Can't see him staying as just a position coach. One last thought - dependent on who the OC is, can you imagine Mallett running the zone-read out of the spread? Now, that would be a sight...

Ferentz's "nice little program" at Iowa has gone 12-13 overall and 6-10 in conference the last two seasons despite a #8 recruiting class in 2005. Yeah, he's the right guy to fix a program alright...

FWIW the Mich blogs are full of Carr has problems with Miles' "integrity".
Might have something to do with a recruit Miles didnt let up on after he verbaled to Mich. and Miles ended up getting

If Ferentz did become the next TSUN head coach...any impact to the Glenville-->OSU pipeline?

I know Ginn Sr. really likes Ferentz, a handful of Glenville players have gone to Iowa over the last couple years.

Lebron Daniel
Bruce Davis
Arvell Nelson
Derrick Smith

Might not be a big initial impact but the current pipeline was definitely bolstered by LLLLoyd's frosty relationship with Glenville.

Much larger than just a Carr gripe. Miles' baggage extends back to his days at UM. As far as Carr vs Miles recruiting battles, winning Eugene over was pretty mild compared to some other stunts by Les.

I think it would be neat seeing what Ferentz could do with more talent. For years he seemed to really develop players (specially O-line) then with success on the field he got higher rated players and the program slipped. Wonder if he'd adjust to that and turn scUM around. If these rumors are true, we may find out.

On a side note, I'm having trouble remembering any coaches who have moved inside a conference. Would this be unique ? (or am I just semi brain dead ?)
