Michigan Coaching Speculation

That went about as well as we could have hoped for. Can't wait to see Mallet run the spread.

Welcome aboard Dick Rod!!
I'm thinking maybe RamRod would be better. First off, it's funny cuz it reminds me of Farva, which is always a good thing. Second, you can do a lot with it, just think of the possibilities.

The most entertaining thing about this is that I could actually see W. Va. fans wishing OSU well at least once a year. Not quite dogs and cats laying together, but maybe dogs and pigs or some such . . .

The entertaining part to me will be watching all the creative ways the scUMers try and spin this to be a positive.

They just hired their John L Smith.

This is great news. A gimmicky coach with traditionally soft teams and a history of choking in the big one. I'd rate this as a notch above DeBord. It seems to me that the brass realized how restless the natives were getting and desperately grasped for a "big name" regardless of how well he fit in on their campus or conference.

I meant did we ask RR to not coach WVU vs. Oklahoma

Stands to reason... I would bet they want him in-house, getting up to speed on the recruiting effort.

...Also, after our performances against U of I's spread from the last couple years, does RR's spread at Michigan worry anyone else?

Our underperformance in both years was primarily the result of an underperforming offense (our own), rather than defensive struggles with the spread. Yes, our defense did have a bad day, but they also held Illinois to less than their average offensive production. And the struggles on defense were missed assignments in most cases.

Spread offenses only cause missed assignments to the extent that teams don't face them all the time and a game plan you put in for them is a new thing being learned in one week in the middle of a school year. The more prevalent they become, the less they'll work, just like every other "new" offense that's come along in the last 130 years. Then the "spread" will become just another piece of what everyone does. It already is just another piece of what OSU does.

As for being concerned with scUM running a spread...

The big question here is how long will it take for RR to get his offense in place? Are the tsun fans/alum going to deal well with 3 straight losses to tOSU while he gets his "system" there? Are they going to deal with losing 2-3 games every year? Because that seems to be RR's MO.
