Michigan Coaching Speculation

Here's what's really been going on.

I hate to say it, but Rich Rodriguez has determined that our coaching search is highly prone to troll disruption. Whenever we suspect that we have a troll on our list of candidates, the best thing that we can do is contact Bill Martin and Mary Sue Coleman, explain the problem, and suggest an appropriate course of action (such as hiring an independent search firm). A clever solution that I noticed at one university was the merging of all troll resumes into a single file simply called "Nick Saban". Unfortunately, we gave the trolling candidate exactly what he wanted.

Coach Rod sincerely apologizes to all who may feel that they are "collateral damage" from this experiment, or may feel "used" or "played". His intent was only to educate. He hopes that all Michigan and West Virginia fans have gained insight on how to effectively deal with disturbing elements in their athletic departments.

I talked to a friend of mine who coached at WVU 2 years ago...as of noon today, the only thing he was sure of was that Rich Rod was on his way to Pryor's championship game.

There are two reliable sources over on the WVU Scout Boards that are giving me the info.

One is stating that the meetings today that Rich Rod had with Ed cleared the issues up that Rich had and that he will be back barring any unforseen issues.

The other person, who by most accounts has "better" sources, has said that the RichRod camp has NOT said anything yet.

That means the info from the other is from the "other" side of the WVU administration. So of course it's not 100% until RichRod says it but unless they both got 2 completely different ideas fromt thier meetings he should remain a Mountaineer from the info I got.

A trail of breadcrumbs courtesy of mgoblog - outbound to RR is done at WV and then back again to RR is a heavy lean to stay in Morgantown.

Outbound - focus on EerHole
further on down the line
and then RR is conflicted ...
in passing Sporting News reported that TSUN did get permission to talk with RR - so the stuff yesterday from their AD says somebody is seriously out of their own loop.
This gem in the middle of the same ..
"I never have heard of a big-time school ever paying a buyout to hire a coach," an agent for college coaches told Sporting News. "I would be shocked if Michigan would pay it, on top of paying Rodriguez over $2 million a year to coach.
Now you don't have to go to 'Bama for confirmation, simply look up the details of the hiring of the TSUN BBall coach last year, also from WVU - payment made, coach hired, case closed.
Then an insider on the WVU board claims that it is certain, RR is staying. Which the EerHole insider also asserts is now the case.

I guess TSUN's long national recruiting nightmare is far from over.

West Virginia must be thrilled - the prodigal son returns.

I can't remember clearly, but I think they found a way around the buyout.
RR is no longer the prodigal son. He is now the philandering husband returning home from yet another affair.

Way I heard it was that it was first bargained down, then a payment was made in the amount of $1.5 Million to the West Virginia Foundation. Close?

Whether those funds come from program boosters or the institution itself is a fine line as far as I am concerned, as that money could help defray other needs Athletic or Academic without the payout to the WVUF.

Could 'EerHole be wrong - and is RR a done deal?

Eerhole may not be right

The thread references another "insider" naming himself "BossHog" -

it also contains the I heard from a friend of a friend rumor - obligatory in these times.

I have no idea who this Boss Hog guy is, but for what it is worth, a trustworthy friend of mine told me he heard Mike Garrison telling people Rich Rodriguez is gone.

Garrison was at a law firm christmas party here in Charleston Friday night, and both him and Alex Macia, one of his top aides, were telling folks RR to Michigan was a done deal.

I never mentioned it before because I don't post that kind of "a friend told me" junk but since it is now corroborated by someone else, I'll mention it.

At the same time, Eerhole and mex have always had good information, possibly from a source closer to the inside than Garrison (who probably only talks to Pastilong)

Personally, I believe Les Miles accepted the UM job months ago and RR is just playing Pastilong as he did with bama last year.
One last requirement in any coaching search - the follow that flight thread.

This one posits a flight from Yeager field to Toledo as carrying out the RR body bag.

I'll just say right now that RR to scUM is like John L to MSU.

Both coaches have a history of augmenting the fundamental problem's the new school was struggling with.

scUM needs a few more years of becoming physically softer and more finesse. They need a few more years of a fundamental lack of focus on defense because the emphasis of the program is on its scheme oriented offense(can'rt wait to see Mallet flourish in the spread). They need a few more years to get to WVU was in terms of spitting the bit in any big game because they are wound up so tight. Also if you watched some of the games WVU won(UC specifically) they usually tried their best to give that one away with late TO's and crucial mistakes. Best of all if its true you are talking 5-10 years before they can dump him.

I'm absolutely delighted if this is true.

Rodriguez stays focused
West Virginia coach refuses to address Michigan rumors
Sunday, December 16, 2007 3:38 AM

Associated Press
West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez discussed the Mountaineers heading to their second Bowl Championship Series game in three seasons and the challenge of facing Oklahoma's offense.

What he didn't talk about yesterday was Michigan's vacant coaching job.
Rodriguez opened the scheduled news conference on No. 11 West Virginia's trip to the Fiesta Bowl by saying he would only talk about the game against the No. 3 Sooners.
"It may be disappointing to you, but I am not going to talk about any rumors or innuendo or jobs or what else is floating out there," Rodriguez said.

I don't remember Coop flopping around like RR does but maybe it's like the trauma doctors tell you, your mind blocks out things too traumatic for you to handle  You are right about Coop getting tight, you could see it in his body language and mannerisms. I don't remember Coops gyrations quite so demonstrative, maybe he was just more classy in his choking.
