Michigan Coaching Speculation

Some new "updates"

From GBW - Radio - Others Report RR is the one and a deal has been made.

There are radio reports saying West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez is going to be Michigan's next head coach. Are they jumping the gun, or heralding the new U-M era? *NEW* Meanwhile, Rodriguez has a presser scheduled. *AND* GBW is getting certain reports now ... *AND* RR was not alone in his talks with U-M ...
From MGoBlog - "They Will Burn Wolverines in Effigy" if this comes to pass

Schwing. Coleman being there, if true, would be a further signal Martin was being gently guided. For the stalkers in the crowd, FlightAware turns up a Morgantown-to-Toledo flight... but it's a Piper.

Rodriguez gets a hearty thumbs-up from these parts, but I expect in about two days he'll scoff at these rumors and sign a contract extension.

Update: News has it independently, citing "sources with knowledge of the search"; Free Press has two people at UM confirming, also mentions Rodriguez' hefty $4 million dollar buyout.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez has a presser scheduled.

It's worth noting one was already on tomorrow's itinerary:

Rodriguez is scheduled to appear at a WVU press conference tomorrow morning which was scheduled several days ago in conjunction with West Virginia's Fiesta Bowl preparations.

There's some brief footage here of Rodriguez's return home.

RR: "I'm going to practice. See you guys. Don't get run over."

That is interesting, if true. I thought the UF AD was the same from Utah that hired Meyer there. I just figured they were tight.

They do or did. That is why Urban didn't take the ND job which is the one he really coveted. Wives were really close too.

Not the AD - Foley dates back to Spurrier's days - you are thinking of UF President Machen - who knew Meyer from Utah.

I think the aforementioned rumors are completely overblown - the Gator boards, on balance, don't buy into that conspiracy theory. Yep, they think Foley is or can be an ass, but then he always was something of an ego waiting to be stroked.

Rodriguez meets Michigan officials?
Agent denies report coach discussed post

West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez spent most of yesterday in Toledo, Ohio, but not in meetings with Michigan officials about their coaching vacancy, his agent said last night.

Mike Brown denied reports in Detroit media and "The Sporting News" saying his client met with Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman and athletic director Bill Martin. If so, Brown said, "That's news to me." Brown, who said he was in Atlanta despite reports that placed him in Toledo, said Rodriguez flew to Ohio to see a financial advisor.

When Michigan turned down Petrino's overtures I knew they weren't interested in making a splashy hire. I would place a sizable vBet that Michigan ends up with a relative unknown and he's making a comparable salary to BB at Wisky.

Rodriguez meets UM officials in Toledo

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Michigan's sometimes clumsy, sometimes clandestine search for a new head football coach brought the school's athletic director and its president to Toledo yesterday for a furtive meeting with current West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez.

News of the secret summit between A.D. Bill Martin, Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman, and the 44-year-old Rodriguez and his agent leaked out yesterday afternoon. A number of media sources in Michigan, West Virginia, and nationally reported that multiple sources confirmed that the meeting had taken place, although the exact location was not identified.

Yeah, right, a financial advisor.... I'm sure we can believe this guy. Is every Mike Brown a dumbass????? Hell, he probably refused to go into the state without financial considerations!! SI link

When asked further whether he knew Rodriguez was talking to Michigan, Pastilong said, "Rich has not mentioned anything of that nature to me. Secondly, we have a strong commitment with Rich, a strong contract. We're strongly committed to him and he's strongly committed to us.
"I think it would be unusual that he would be doing that without sharing it with us

Let's see how strong the contract is Bubba.....

A couple of thoughts.

WVU fans turned on RR big time last year when he had all but packed his bags. Then tried to do an about face when he recanted. This year when he lost to Pitt their attitude was not "thanks for taking us to the #2 spot -as high as our program has ever been", bur rather "how come you couldn't win one game when this opportunity was handed to you".

WVU is kidding themselves about who they are. It is a thankless job for RR and he is foolish if he doesn't find another. WVU kept him with a bunch of cash and promises. Did they keep the promises? I don't know. But the fans are HS fans and that isn't going to change.

My other thought is in regards to Noel Divine. Most of the major programs passed on this kid because they saw no way they could get him into school. RR found a way. Is that the reputation the proud Michigan wants to bring to AA?

Beyond that, he would be a strong coach who will give us fits and elevate the level of play in the Big Ten.

And if he does go to UM don't be surprised if Pryor goes with him. What is RR going to to with Mallett?

-Putting the Pryor angle aside for a minute. I'm not nearly as concerned as some.

-RR's teams have consistently been 2 things at WVU: Physically soft and mentally weak(especially in big games). I'm fine with RR going to tsun and continuing those traditions.

-As much as I'd love to see another scheme guy come into the B10 and suffer the same fate as his predecessors I don't see it happening. Stodgy old tsun and a flashy/job jumping/name coach that has a history of bringing in borderline recruits? I hope they do but I don't see it.

OTOH how funny would it be to see scUM raid WVU for its football and Bball coaches, with both being dedicated scheme guys? Conferences with teams that are comprised of big time athletes and big time coaches figure out schemes real quick. Thats the problem with scheme guys imo, once their trick is figured out they don't know anything else and they are usually so wrapped up in what they run that they are fundamentally poor teams in the special teams and defensive areas.
