Michigan Coaching Speculation

It may not be. IMO though, he's gone too far with the "I'm staying" routine to back out of it now. If he ends up at Michigan next year, he's more of a snake than Saban.

can't really blame les miles here at all. say if he really wants to coach at michigan...but still wants to finish out the year with his LSU players and coach them in a NC game. Since the media won't leave him alone.. he keeps saying he'll be the coach next year etc. so he can focus on the SEC championship game and NC championship game.

I would not blame him even if he decides to leave LSU.

I can't agree more with you. For some reason that new contract that he "signed" or has an agreement with sounds a little to fishy for me. I just don't know why a coach would take a new contract and not want a raise especially after his record with LSU(it is good), winning the SEC Title and going to the NCG. Something just doesn't sit right.

Leslie's new contract is no different than his old one, except is is for longer and more money. He still has the exact same out clause in it for Michigan. He's actually pretty smart b/c now Michigan will have to pay him more to get him. He basicly assured himself a raise at one of the two places.

Actually there is no more money in the new contract for Miles, only a 2 year extension. The raise he is going to get was already in the old contract. There is an increase of about $200,000 per year based on players academic progress, but that will be divided among the assistant coaches.

One of the factors affecting this impression of Miles and the on-again, off for certain, on again, off for certain dance is how reminiscent it is of the situation that preceded the Alamo Bowl.

That was held on Wednesday 29th December 2004.

On Monday Miles was asked in a presser about rumors he was being asked by the Tigers about interest in the LSU job.

His response ..
On Monday, before Oklahoma State's practice session at Alamo Heights High School, Miles was asked about the LSU situation. "I am preparing to play in a bowl game," he replied. "I want no distractions for my football team. I'm not looking around."
Sound familiar?

Next in timeline a report of a phone interview between Miles and LSU. This was published in the Oklahoman (probably by that bastion of food science Jenni Carlson for all I know - sadly the article has been pulled, probably to make space on the server).

Sound familiar?

Lastly you have the Miles name dropping below the radar for 24 hours and then resurfacing on the 31st December, then becoming solid as a rock in the first week of January.

So, Nutriaitch, when you say that Miles wasn't evading the issue of interviews in the ESPN article you are right. Of course, that was after the Bowl Game which his team, perhaps distracted, or perhaps due to the coach's distracted coaching, lost when they came in a 4 point favorite in Texas. Of course, that was after he first did in fact deny reports of any contact between himself and LSU, which were determined to be true reports.

Sound familiar?

Les Miles may in fact be telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Due to his past evasivenesses, when facing a similar situation, can you see why some already doubt his word?

I've tried to find articles from in and around Oklahoma from that time, but haven't had any luck. Everything I've read thus far though makes it sound as if he used "coachspeak". A lot of non-denial denials. To my knowledge, he never definitively ruled out going to LSU, interviewing with LSU, or definitvely said "I'm coaching OkSU next year" . Which is pretty much what every coach linked to any new job does. I don't necessarily agree with that approach, but they all do it.

Other than Saban with the Alabama fiasco, I don't know of any other coach to definitely rule out any one specific job (like Miles has now done) and take that job anyway. Especially not to go to the extremes that Miles has to quelch these rumors.

Now I'm not going to sit here and tell you it's impossible that he ends up in Ann Arbor, but I do think that it's unlikely. Like I said before, I think he's gone through too much trouble to say "I'm staying" for him not to be actually staying.

P.S. If the reported contract for Petrino at Arky for 3 mil a year is true, then Miles will make a minimum of 3 mil next year at LSU. He's gauranteed top 3 SEC money right now. Saban = 3.5-4mil, Tuberville = 3.3 (avg), Petrino 3 mil (?)

LSU's Miles insists again he's not going to Michigan

Detroit Free Press
Les Miles declared again yesterday that he plans to coach Louisiana State, not Michigan, next season. And he said a conversation with Michigan officials last week was to help find Lloyd Carr's successor -- not to pursue the job himself.
The Detroit Free Press reported yesterday that Miles had a phone conversation with Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman and athletic director Bill Martin. The conversation was Friday, the day after Miles signed a contract extension with LSU.
Yesterday afternoon, Miles released this statement: "I had a conversation with Michigan last week that covered a wide range of topics. I was doing nothing more than helping them with their search for a football coach, just as any loyal alumnus might

It will be interesting to see how this all fleshes out. It looks like a total fiasco in Ann Arbor, but maybe it is much more organized behind the scenes than we know (but I doubt it) With LSU making the MNC game it did throw a monkey wrench in things.

I almost feel sorry for Miles, it appears obvious that he wants to be at UM, but the timing is terrible for him.

Sure makes me happy to have had Geiger here and to have JT here now.
:oh:

If he should beat Ohio State, they won't care if he's proven to be a bank robber in Ann Arbor. Right now, they'd take any hope they can get.

Totally agree. Conversely, what happens to Michigan's "interest" in him should for some reason he not only lose to Ohio State but lose big (by 2+ TDs)?
