Michigan Coaching Speculation

Totally agree. Conversely, what happens to Michigan's "interest" in him should for some reason he not only lose to Ohio State but lose big (by 2+ TDs)?

I've been meaning to ask the scUMers how they would feel if their new coach started out 2 in the hole to OSU.

Does anyone else find it borderline comical that while all this Michigan confusion is going on, Arkansas goes out and quietly hires a proven winner and offensive genius?

Petrino to Arkansas
Yes. What I find comical is to guess how long Petrino will be there. My best bet is only as long as Phil Fulmer is still at Tennessee. Arkansas can have Petrino. The guy couldn't even be bothered to finish one full season at his last job, how loyal do you think he'll be to any other program?

You mean if we hired a guy and still lost the next two OSU games? Or if we hired Les Miles who was 0-2 against OSU before he got here?

'Cause, y'see, that first Les Miles game against OSU was when he was at Oklahoma State. Which is like saying we don't want Brian Kelly because he's 0-1 against MSU (having lost to them at Central once.) In other words that 0-2 thing would mean the world to OSU fans and nothing at all to Michigan fans. Kind of a lame thing to hang your hat on, really.

Ignoring the '2' part, how would UM fans feel about hiring a coach if they got blown out by OSU (not my expectation), likely with more talent at his disposal than he'd have next fall when visiting columbus?

I agree in principle with you, but was Brian Kelly's Central team a 4 point favorite over MSU and playing on a "neutral" field?

can't really blame les miles here at all. say if he really wants to coach at michigan...but still wants to finish out the year with his LSU players and coach them in a NC game. Since the media won't leave him alone.. he keeps saying he'll be the coach next year etc. so he can focus on the SEC championship game and NC championship game.

I would not blame him even if he decides to leave LSU.

He has no other choice but to say what he said if in fact he said what everyone thinks he said or what other people said he might have said.

Disclaimer: IF Miles ends up at tsun and IF we win the NC game.

It would be lame to make note that your new coach played two games against Tress with equal or better talent, as the favorite and lost both?

I would beg to differ.

It would be equally lame for me to root for LSU in order to take away that bragging point from you guys just in case we get Miles. So I really don't care.

Besides, in case you guys haven't noticed, Ohio State's pretty good. So if you narrow the criteria down to who's got a winning record against Tressel at OSU, I haven't done all the research on this one, but I think plugging that criterion into a computer might return a null set. Making this whole discussion pretty moot.

If he should beat Ohio State, they won't care if he's proven to be a bank robber in Ann Arbor. Right now, they'd take any hope they can get.

Likely so, and that's a damned shame. If Miles's seemingly incessant denials somehow do not reflect reality and he still plans on making a move to AA, I just can't grasp why anyone would still want him. Perhaps it's another case of:

"Desperation is sometimes as powerful an inspirer as genius."
-- Disraeli

I originally posted that quote on BP about a year ago, ironically, in response to Alabama fans being overjoyed by Saban's hire. Man would it ever suck to be in the same boat.

I'd rather lose with integrity than hire a proven liar.
