Michigan Coaching Speculation

I need Ferenz to become the coach because I have a ton of vbucks on him.

So what exactly would Miles bring to Mich. His over all coaching record isn't all that great. 28 -21 at OK st. Not sure about his record at LSU but I'm sure that it was the talent level as much as his coaching.
He played for Bo coached some there But in the end that doesn't mean squat if he can't coach all that great.

He's gone to greater lengths to deny this job than Saban ever did. Saban just ran his mouth a lot, he never signed an extension right before taking a job he denied he was going to take.

(Yes he did sign a new deal a year before going to the Dolphins)

I agree with you here--Miles has gone way further than Saban ever did. If Miles takes the UM job now, I would be absolutely shocked.

We'll obviously have to wait and see what happens, I just don't see why he would go through all the charades he's gone through so far.

Charades is the point. Where is the definitive statement from Miles that he absolutely under no circumstances will take the Michigan job? It is an easy one to make.

Here is how this MAY have played out so far:

Miles is open with the LSU AD that he is interested in the Michigan job. They agree the championship game(s) comes first.

Miles issues a non-denial denial. He does it poorly. Every time he does it, it only gets worse.

Miles and the AD agree that an announcement of an agreed upon contract will quell the rumors. They don't do any real negotiations but announce an agreement. That the agreement is not signed fuels the speculation.

They sign an agreement. What does it say? Is there a raise? What is the advantage to Miles - the man with the leverage - in this agreement? Does the signing of this agreement preclude his leaving?

It is a charade designed to keep the media off his back till January 8th.

Michigan doesn't want to be left hanging so the contact between the two continues. (Why IS it taking a school that has known for over a year they are making a coaching change so long to get the job done?)

Miles says he is helping Michigan with their search. Where is the help from Michigan clearing up that they are not interested in him as a candidate?

Will Miles take some hits if he goes to UM? Who cares. Thad Matta issued a firm denial of interest in the OSU job a week before he accepted it. He gets booed when he plays Xavier. Everyone else worships him. I love the guy.

What sucks is that coaches in this position have every right to pursue jobs that interest them and every right to keep the process under wraps while it is ongoing. We all look for new jobs and none of us want the old boss to know about it.

The only time I have a problem is when they purposely mislead others who have similar decisions to make (i.e. coaches who leave the week after LOI signing day.)

Miles to Michigan.

I just hope he starts his career off 0-2 against JT.

"I'm not a candidate for that job and I will not be a candidate for the job. I was only assisting them in their search for a coach," he added. "I have a great job at a wonderful place, a place that my family calls home. It's time that Michigan goes on with their search for a football coach.
"I'll say it again, I'm going to be the coach at LSU next season."

From the ESPN article I linked a few posts up.

I just pulled this off the mgoblog.

EXCLUSIVE: Transcript of Miles Conversation With Michigan

#fullpost {display:none;}Les Miles: Uh... hello?

Mary Sue Coleman: Hi, Les. It's Mary Sue Coleman. Let me patch in Bill Martin.

Bill Martin: (faintly) Hello? Hello?

MSC: Bill.

BM: (faintly) Hello?

MSC: Turn the phone around, Bill.

BM: What?

MSC: YOU'RE SPEAKING INTO THE WRONG END OF THE PHONE.

BM: (louder) Oh.

Miles: So....

MSC: Les, as you know, the University of Michigan is looking for a head coach. We would like any prospective candidates to have a strong understanding of the program's history, an established track record of success--

BM: -- and sailing experience --

MSC: -- as a college football head coach, and --

BM: -- any other sort of boating-type experience. Motor. Catamaran. You know. Water-type things.

MSC: and a strong rapport with his charges. Anyway, Les, you've just won the SEC, have a 36-6 record in three years at LSU, and are well loved by your program. You also lettered twice under Bo and love this program more than any other. So...

BM: ... do you know anyone that fits our criteria?

Miles: Uh... me?

BM: I didn't see any jib or mizzenmast experience on your resume.

Miles: Right. That's because I'm a football coach. I coach football.

BM: In fact, your resume made no reference to sailing whatsoever. So you're out, asshole.

MSC: I think what Bill is trying to say is that we would like to offer you--

BM: --the opportunity to tell us who might be our perfect candidate. Reminder: Michigan ties, success, sailing.

Miles: No, sorry. I don't know anyone who fits that criteria.

BM: Well screw you, buddy!

Click.

MSC: Bill... next time let me do the talking.

BM: Lloyd says Brady Hoke dresses up like Long John Silver on most Tuesdays. Let's hire him.

I know this has been said, but I think he's officially out of the tsun job, if he went through saying all of this and took the job he would lose all credibility. Basically, I think Michigan would be his last head coaching job because people wouldn't be able to take his word for shit.

What I meant to say was "Where is the definitive statement - I know I had it around here somewhere."

I still don't think it is over.

It may not be. IMO though, he's gone too far with the "I'm staying" routine to back out of it now. If he ends up at Michigan next year, he's more of a snake than Saban.

Agreed. He's gone overboard on the I'm staying bit. If he does bolt, how do you jive that up with the "michigan man=paradigm of virtue" myth they perpetuate up there?

If he should beat Ohio State, they won't care if he's proven to be a bank robber in Ann Arbor. Right now, they'd take any hope they can get.

I don't know if he will take the job when offered, but I am still unconvinced that he will not go to TSUN if offered.

I also hope that Ohio State's players realize that this doesn't make a hill of beans about whether LSU will be prepared to play their best game of the season. Ignore the sideshow boys, get ready to play your best game of the season too.
