Michigan Coaching Speculation

Sources: Michigan still after Miles

Louisiana State head football coach Les Miles appears to be a Michigan coaching candidate again.Miles had a phone conversation Friday morning with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin and school president Mary Sue Coleman, according to several people with knowledge of the call.
Michigan received permission Nov. 28 from LSU athletic director Skip Bertman to speak with Miles, as long as it was after the Dec. 1 SEC championship game. So asking LSU again for permission was not an issue; Michigan is believed to have initiated Friday's call.
Bertman said Monday night he didn't know if Miles had had contact with Michigan. But he said he doubted anyone could sway Miles to leave LSU."He and Bo Schembechler were real close," Bertman said. "If Bo Schembechler were alive I doubt he could have got him to go to Michigan. It's hard for people who don't live in the South to understand."
Miles played and coached under Schembechler at Michigan.

I think this is funny. Les Miles will always be in the conversation because he keeps insisting that he has a buy out claus if Michigan were to hire him. I can see this being a big distraction for the Big Game. If he never had this claus in his contract for his new renewal, this wouldn't be an issue, but since he keeps putting this in, it will always be in question.

I don't think he wants the buyout in there. Most coaches would love a contract with NO buyouts at all. That would give them freedom to leave when they want to go where they want. LSU put that in there to give them some security in knowing that if Michigan hires him away, they get an extra 1.2 mil.

I seriously doubt that Miles asked Skip "Please force me to pay you most of a years salary for me to go to my Alma Mater"

If I've got a MNC game to prepare for, especially against my potential future rival... getting a contract extension would be a desirable distraction, especially when it changes absolutely nothing with an identical buyout clause. It's a PR move with no actual teeth below the surface.

I seriously doubt Miles will be footing that bill, but I catch your dritf.

Yeah - because leaving the door open for a pay-out that TSUN would likely fill anyway is just insane ..

Which reminds me ..

Groucho: "That's in every contract, that's what you call a sanity clause."
Chico: "You can't a fool a me there ain't no sanity clause"

A PR move to could potentially come back to bite him in the ass if he ends up in Ann Arbor. This would be going much farther than Saban did, and I think the media backlash would be much worse than what Nicky received. Heck, the talking heads are already rolling him under the bus for answering the phone when they called.

It's not a buyout clause for Michigan. Damn near every coach has a buyout clause that says they have to buy out of their contract if they voluntarily leave for another school. The so-called buyout clause in Miles' contract covers EVERY school, it's just more expensive for Michigan. Hence why Miles has been in the crosshairs ever since September. If it wasn't more likely that he leaves for Michigan than any other school, the clause wouldn't be amped up just for Michigan.

ESPN - Miles: 'I'll say it again, I'm going to be the coach at LSU' - College Football

"I had a conversation with Michigan last week that covered a wide range of topics. I was doing nothing more than helping them with their search for a football coach, just as any loyal alumnus might do. It was nothing more than that," Miles said.

"I'm not a candidate for that job and I will not be a candidate for the job. I was only assisting them in their search for a coach," he added. "I have a great job at a wonderful place, a place that my family calls home. It's time that Michigan goes on with their search for a football coach."

How exactly would Miles be helping their coaching search? If indeed he is not interested, the last thing UM wants is for Miles to linger, giving more hope and ammo to the LARGE alumni/fanbase majority longing for his services. The chances of finding an equal hire to Miles (excitement-wise) are very slim, so I would imagine both parties wish to move forward IF things are done there.

But what if the Guarantee Fairy's a crazy glue sniffer? Next thing you know there's change missing from your dresser and your daughter's knocked up. I've seen it a hundred times.

My best guess is that it gave UM an excuse to call. Knowing that he had already signed, and publicly said he wasn't going, followed by the debacle the coaching search appears to have become, calling him could come off as them "begging". So you call an "alum" and ask his opinion of a few things, ask for a donation or two maybe, then casually ask "so, you sure you not interested in coming home?" He claims he's not a candidate. We'll see what happens.

See Nick Saban for further reference...

He's gone to greater lengths to deny this job than Saban ever did. Saban just ran his mouth a lot, he never signed an extension right before taking a job he denied he was going to take.

(Yes he did sign a new deal a year before going to the Dolphins)
