Michigan Coaching Speculation

Meyer,
Holtz

Well shit, if we could pry Meyer loose from Florida, I'd be happy for more reasons than just "winning record against OSU." As for Holtz, I'd prefer a coach that didn't require his team to put rainjackets on before his motivational speeches.

That K.C. Keeler thing though....I'll say this, he does have this adorable "not Kirk Ferentz" thing about him.

Here's a theory (albeit not a very likely one):

Miles agrees in principle to a contract with Michigan before the SECCG, when it looks like they have no shot at the NCG. Miles tells LSU's AD, he is pissed but can't do anything about it (if I remember, Les wasn't too popular in BR for a week there anyways). Word leaks out Saturday before the game, and the AD tells Miles he still has an obligation to the school for the SECCG, Les agrees and holds that press conference to deny the reports, which he didn't do a great job of anyways. They play the SECCG, and the LSU administration is ready to bid Les goodbye. But then a funny thing happens- WVU and Missouri both lose, leaving LSU in the drivers seat for the NCG.

Miles has already agreed with Michigan to become the next coach, and thats where he wants to be. But he realizes his shot at a national championship is very real, and he wants to win one, plus you can't leave a team right before the NCG. He talks this through with LSU's AD, and they agree that something definitive has to be done to quell all the Les to AA rumors so that he and his team can concentrate on the game. So Les signs a contract extension that changes absolutely nothing, and on the surface it appears Les is staying at LSU. Michigan interviews other "candidates" who have absolutely no interest in the job (Schiano) or who they would never offer the job to (Hoke) to look like they are doing something, but their coach is coming up on 1/8 anyways.

Clearly this is very unlikely, the biggest reason being that it would have leaked somewhere unless the only people who know about it are Les, Bertman, Martin, and MSC. But I mean hell, it could happen.

One flaw in your theory. Miles reached an agreement in principle with LSU officials to remain as the LSU HC late Friday night before the SECCG. Granted it was a verbal agreement but I'm certain that at that point in time Les had decided LSU was where he wanted to be.

Certain or hoping?

This is what I have been thinking as well. For some reason I just can't reason why Michigan is taking so long "trying" to find a new head coach. Also they have be very discrete with all the info comming out of AA about a coach. Just seems like something is brewing and we wont find out until 1/8.

I think this has thrown many people off because the majority have come to expect a pretty expeditious hire in the current landscape. From the day LC retired though, Martin's comments pretty clearly indicated that we wouldn't be seeing a replacement hired at anywhere near light speed.

With the media and general public working on timetables completely of their own designs, this "delay" has been construed to mean all kinds of things: "Hah! UM can't find anyone!", "Martin's an incompetent buffoon more interested in hosting nautical wine-tasting excursions.", and most recently "See? They're just biding their time until the NCG is over so they can announce Miles.". I don't think any of these are the case.

Wasn't one of the recruiting insiders saying the same thing way back in the very beginning(Wad maybe?).

IIRC it was that Martin is a bean counter by trade and is going to be methodical, if the process takes them past LOI day then so be it kind of thing.

Jives up perfectly with what you are saying and is a much more basic explination for the way things are going. Ockhams razor and all that.

I'm not sure offhand.

Ah, you're totally speaking my language there. Exactly.

Plus, we're not in a situation where we've fired someone or have to deal with uncertainty surrounding interim personnel, all while totally under the gun. We have a complete coaching staff in place (through New Year's Day at least), and I think from the start, a minimal impact (if any) has been expected on the recruiting front. So far, so good.

At this point, I'd be pretty upset if Les Miles were to take the Michigan job. I mean, he has gone so far to state that he is going to stay at LSU. If he were to leave now, he would be no better than Nick Saban or Bobby Petrino. All the Bo comparisons he gets, IMO, would immediately need to be thrown out the window, as Bo would never do something like that.

Honestly, I think the Bo comparisons have been quite premature, but I absolutely agree. Of course I have as much chance of selling the increasingly large contingent of desperate fans on this as I would peddling Relativity textbooks in the Sahara.
