Michigan Coaching Speculation

Would one of you guys mind telling me what exactly mgoblog means when the following is written:

"Tressel, OTOH, is interesting: that move would be the Machiavellian genius I now, sadly, expect from Tressel whenever Michigan blunders into his path."

I can't read into it whether he is bashing Tressel or being self-depricatingly funny.
Theory: The problem with Tressel (besides the obvious) is that he's sickeningly classy. Not that we Michigan fans don't appreciate that sort of thing, but he gives us absolutely nothing to hate other than in the win-loss column. Losing so much would be much easier to stomach if Dennis Franchione were your coach because then we could say "well at least our coach isn't a low-life that sells private info to boosters." Tressel, at least to all appearances, is a harmless fuzzball in a quirky outfit that everyone loves who never ever ever says anything mean about our team and happens to put a kick-ass team on the field. Grrrrr. Hating him would be much more fun if it turned out he worked behind the scenes to sabotage the Miles hire, or, I dunno, was secretly paying Beanie Wells a five-figure stipend or doing his homework for him or something. So even if it's more likely that Tressel has been to Mars than meddled in the Miles affair, no doubt there are those who find it satisfying to grasp at that straw.

I rather enjoyed when JT was firing on Herbie during the interview on ESPN last night (Sunday). I think I counted 2-3 references to things that Herbstreit has said: one about spreading "rumors" when he said hello and another about "oh, you have reliable sources" when Rece Davis asked about the code for the locks at the WHAC.

Thanks for the insight, HtM. Never thought about it from that perspective.

If Penn State fans has spouted that "Machiavellian Genius" line, I'd believe they actually meant it. Actually, I'd believe that somebody from another school told them what it meant first, and then they came to believe it. When I read it on MGoBlog, it comes across to me as just joking. I think I said it in another thread, but I know our coach isn't really cut from that cloth. But I'm proud the fact that he's been so successful that that kind of thing is all that our rivals have to latch on to.

Ah, more fun leaks in the scUM coach search:

link

Two sources . . .

Have now told me that Kirk Ferentz is at the top of Michigan's list of coaching candidates.

Members of Michigan's search committee leaked today that Ferentz has been made priority No. 1. Lloyd Carr, who's retiring after 13 seasons at Michigan, is pushing for Ferentz, a source said. He has a say in this. Mary Sue Coleman, UM's president and the UI president when Ferentz was hired at Iowa, has a say in this. That's according to logic, by the way.

UM athletics director Bill Martin said in a statement Sunday, a day after LSU staved off Michigan and held on to Les Miles, "As for Michigan, we are continuing with the process we established and will continue to talk with and research our list of candidates."

Carr said during a Capital One Bowl teleconference that the process would wrap up "quickly," meaning by the end of December.

Now, remember, this is coming from Michigan's end. This is what Michigan people are saying. This is a Michigan story, and if it breaks, it will likely break out of Michigan.

Continued...

Circle the wagons back to Ferencz!

I have it on good authority that Jim Donnan is available and interested. His ability to consistently lead a major program to nine win seasons and mid-level bowl games makes him a viable successor to LLLoyd.

Mary Sue Coleman has always been a moron. I will never forgive her if it turns out she meddled in the hiring process and demanded the hiring of a less-competent coach (Ferentz).

several people have brought up this connection between coleman and ferentz, and i, for one, have never really understood it. i don't see how/why just because she hired him as HFC when she was at iowa, why a lot of people are assuming that she'll pull for the same thing at tSUN.

i don't recall how it went down, but maybe he was just the best fit for the job out of the pool of available candidates at the time - no more; no less. has coleman made some sort of comment to this effect that would anchor people to this notion?

I think the assumption is that Ferentz is underqualified for the job and the only thing that would put him so high on the list is the Coleman connection. No, she's never said anything explicit, but my thinking is, Bill Martin's the sort of guy who allowed the Miles deal to go under because he was too afraid of offending the LSU AD. And LSU isn't even a Big Ten school. Would Martin really do a near-complete 180 as far as decorum is concerned and poach a Big Ten coach for his own school? Not without a little threatening from above, methinks.
