Michigan Coaching Speculation

Michigan couldn't get Miles because Bill Martin was allegedly off sailing in Florida... presumably trying to dispose of an alien corpse in the Bermuda Triangle. Or something.

Sheesh, the stench of sour grapes just won't go away.
I've heard the sailing story and I just don't believe it. Martin was visible and making statements to the media and in touch with people on both Thursday and Saturday, presumably from Ann Arbor. He had a bowl invite to wait for which could have come any minute. And we're to believe that in between, he gallivanted off to Key Largo for a sailing trip, right in the middle of trying to do the most important thing he'll ever do as AD? Bill Martin just seems too old-school (and frankly, not imaginative enough) to pull a jet-set stunt like that.

Why would Les and his shady crew be trying to reach Martin on Friday anyway? didn't they agree to wait until after the SEC championship game (Saturday Night) to talk to TSUN?

FIRE MARTIN!

Would you care to present a cogent argument enumerating specific reasons why Martin should get the boot? Are you suggesting he be canned immediately, in the middle of a coaching search, so we'll have two key positions to fill?

Take a moment and think about what you're advocating. Seriously.

Exactly. I realize some hold Martin in less-than-fond regard, but these allegations border on the insane. It reeks of a scapegoat cycle to me, and this is the next step made by the disgruntled in playing the blame game -- first it was Herbstreit, then Miles, then Bertman/O'Keefe/LSU, and now our AD. It pains me that people are so willing to deliver scathing indictments without having facts at their disposal.

Another spot-on observation, and it goes both ways -- even if Bass had attempted contact Friday, why would Martin have returned the call? That'd constitute a breach of some sort, wouldn't it? Further, what I've read suggests Martin was interested in speaking directly to the AD and/or Miles, not to Miles's agent -- that was the nature of the agreement as I understand it: direct, official communication.

Here's what Bass said Thursday, November 30th:

I have not talked to anyone up there. They haven't called, and I'm really not surprised because that's the way Michigan proceeds. There's some schools that will talk anyway (without permission), but Michigan operates the same way I do. If they call -- which they won't -- I would say, 'Hey, you have to have permission.'

I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to make contact Sunday. They may not go through me, but directly to Les. Michigan will honor what Skip has asked, to not contact Les until after the SEC game, and Les wouldn't talk to them until after that, anyway.

Carty's claims just don't add up.

fixed it...

FWIW: Martin says he got the message from Miles' agent, defends not calling back

He said when he received permission to contact Miles from LSU last Wednesday, he agreed to wait until after Saturday's Southeastern Conference title game between the Tigers and Tennessee, and believes that promise to wait extended to Miles agent as well.

"I did (call), Sunday morning," Martin said. "Why Sunday morning? I committed not to talk to Les Miles, directly or indirectly before the championship game on Saturday. That's the way this process is done, or at least the way I'm honoring the process."

This is consistent with my take on the situation, namely that Miles really did not want to be the next UM coach. Think about it--if it really were his dream job, why would he agree with LSU to an extension on Saturday (the day of the SECCG) when UM had asked for and received permission to talk with Miles AFTER the SECCG? For Miles to now claim that it was UM's fault for not responding to Miles' agent's alleged call on Friday seems to me to be nothing more than a convenient excuse for Miles telling his alma mater to get lost. IMO, this isn't UM's fault for keeping its word; rather, it's Miles' fault for apparently taking advantage of his (correct) guess that UM would do so.

Here is what I heard from "Mike" a tOSU coach back in the 70's supposedly from a big time scum alumni.
Anyway The Mich pres and Carr want Ference. The big money Cats all want Miles.
Mich offered Miles 3.5 per year and he was going to take it but for some reason Martin couldn't be reached. In the meantime LSU got wind of it and has offered Miles 5 per year and Mich refused to match it. They also say that Miles may still be signed at Mich but that may be a pipe dream. It is also said that the big money guys are pulling their money back and dumping skyboxes etc. big time because they want Miles /a mich guy.
The pres and Carr think Miles is too "loosey goosey" for Mich.
So if Miles gets 5 then we know this is true stuff.

Not a chance that happened. I don't know if UM and Miles talked, or didn't talk, if any offers were made or weren't made, but I'm quite confident that LSU's offer to Miles fall well short of the 5 mil per year mark. I'm thinking maybe in the 3-3.5 range.

The thing is after winning the SEC CG, Miles is gauranteed to be one of the top 3 highest paid coaches in the SEC. Tubby just got a raise, and Phat Phil is rumored to be getting one. So right now, the dollar amount that he is due, isn't even known yet, and won't be until the dust clears around the SEC. If we beat OSU in January, he's gauranteed to be top 3 in the country. Which would probably be right around Saban and Weiss dollars.
I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up a couple bucks above Saban, just a little "Fuck You" from LSU to Nicky.

Weis dollars. That still makes me laugh my ass off.

I have nothing new to add only that I still won't believe that Miles isn't the next head coach at Michigan until he signs something.

Things surrounding the Michigan coaching search just seem way too quiet to me. This is one of the top 10 if not top 5 jobs in the whole country. Has anyone heard Les come out and say I'm not going to be coaching Michigan next season? No. He said that he will be the head coach at LSU and he's not interested in talking to anybody else. Well, now how vague is that? If the contract is done and they are just dotting some i's and crossing some t's then why not come out and give LSU a ringing endorsement as in "I'm here to stay. This is where I'm going to be now and for a long time to come." Something like that.

I firmly believe that Les Miles will be coaching at Michigan come next season.

Something like this?

Les Miles: "Absolutely. I'm staying at LSU. This is a place I want to be. This is a place my family is very comforatable. This school has everything. It has an opportunity at victory and competing at the highest level. Personally, professionally, socially, we have friends here. I respect the young men that I coach. Anybody that I have signed, when I tell them I am going to be here, I was sincere. I'm the head coach at LSU and I'm going to be the head coach at LSU."

This post has been flagged for inflation - penalty is 15-yards and 1.5 million from the spot of each foul.

IMHO, the media left Smiles no choice but to say what he did.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to Michigan we go.

Let's put it this way. That is where his heart is and the cupboard is not bare.

I cannot think of one reason for him to stay especially enough to override the above two reasons.
