Michigan Coaching Speculation

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to Michigan we go.
It's pretty clear he's leaving that door open, but I'm not sure if he'll walk through it.
Let's put it this way. That is where his heart is and the cupboard is not bare.
Offensive tackle is bone dry, and Long is leaving. Schilling/others returning at RT is no comfort either (he belongs inside).
Mallett has a ways to go, but I guess the potential is there.
UM likely lacks a feature RB next year.
Mario is likely gone, and Arrington could go as well.
CB depth will remain very scarce, and 5-star verbal Cissoko is getting zooked. That leaves UM with Warren and little else after next year.
And arguably UM's weakest position, safety, does not look promising, especially with Adams & Englemon graduating.
DE is a bit thin as well, and Nick Perry is looking hard at SC.

It may not be bone dry, but there are a lot of holes to fill imo.

Les Miles: "Absolutely. I'm staying at LSU. This is a place I want to be. This is a place my family is very comforatable. This school has everything. It has an opportunity at victory and competing at the highest level. Personally, professionally, socially, we have friends here. I respect the young men that I coach. Anybody that I have signed, when I tell them I am going to be here, I was sincere. I'm the head coach at LSU and I'm going to be the head coach at LSU."
It's still ambiguous. "I'm staying at LSU...I am going to be here...I'm going to be the head coach at LSU." For how long? If he really is sincere about not taking the Michigan job, then all he has to do is say so in simple, clear, concrete terms, such as, "I will not take the head coaching job at Michigan and I will be the head coach at LSU next season." He just won't, because he knows this is his one and only chance at the job he's waited his entire adult life for...if he doesn't not take the Michigan job now, he'll never be offered again.

No doubt and those are great points.

I guess my thoughts were more that the program doesn't need a rebuild because afterall it is TSUN. Something more along the lines of a little revitalization.

They still have more talent than 3/4 of the Big 10.

If there were no holes, they wouldn't need a new coach. (Or if Carr were still leaving despite a perfect situation, that's when you usually get your Larry Coker's and Frank Solich's... )

At any rate... if Miles goes to Michigan... and... I'm nto sying he is... he's gonna be there for the long haul, so, a bad year or two or three isn't going to deter that.

another very important piece of the puzzle here, especially in relation to tsun's inauspicious future on defense, is Ron English. the powers-that-be at tsun have to know that they're likely to lose English if they don't give him the top job. if they let English go (amicably or otherwise), the incoming HC would have even more work to do to keep defensive recruits committed and condition this year's backups to step up in the face of a leadership vaccum (both in terms of players and coaches).

as such, i think English is getting a much more serious look than we realize. maybe that's why AD Martin's level of urgency appears low.

either way you cut it, it's a pretty big job. maybe scUM ought to see when David Petraeus' contract with the Army is set to expire!

This has been parroted by media outlets for so long now that it's just been assumed to happen with the only question being when. I've expressed for some time (and it's been frequently met with resistance) that it's never been a forgone conclusion.

The focus almost singularly has been on what Les seemingly wants, but I don't think many have paused to consider what the decision makers in Ann Arbor want. While he may have been or may still be a popular choice among a number of fans and some donors, I don't think he's ever held such status with Martin, Carr et al.

Ok then how's this quote?

"There's a proud tradition, and they have to do the things they have to do. I'm for them, and if there's any way I can help them, I'd love to help them. But I'm not going there. It saddens me at times. I can't be at two places. I've got a great place. I'm home."

Oh I agree, I was just playing devil's advocate. I think LSU is one of the few places I might stay at in this situation, especially with the in-state and nearby talent.

Yeah, that seems definite. I think he's been clear that he's not going. That's not to say that he cannot back out and go anyway, but he's been clear enough. Obviously he'll be considered a liar if he leaves based upon what he's already said, so I'm not sure there's any point in him saying anything else about it.

Right. If he does take the job, I can't envision him sitting down and explaining all the ways in which he didn't lie......

"You see, I said I would be LSU's coach next year, and that was in 2007, and I was the coach in January of 2008, so really....I was completely honest there.......not my fault you people heard what you wanted to hear."

etc...

Actually, it's Les Miles. I can totally see him doing that.
