Jimmy Haslam on Sam:

“Absolutely we would welcome Michael Sam to the Cleveland Browns organization if he can help us win games and is the right football player for this team. We are intent on creating an environment that is supportive, accepting and respectful of individual rights and differences.”

Of course he went on to say, "Of course we have 17 Tweener DE/OLB's already, now if he could play inside linebacker like a Tennesse volunteer, sure we'd have a look at him. Them 49ers'll prolly draft him though, so I can say whatever the hell I want"

So we now have the story from one of the players at Mizzou who say his team mates were effectively talking behind the guys back and now we have an ESPiN front page story from his allegedly supportive and knowing father saying he is struggling to accept the announcement and reality that his son is gay.

makes you wonder what else might unravel from this story in the coming months since it's clear it will be shoved at us at least up until and after the draft.

The football club house is still a Spartan camp where being openly gay does not fly. We have to decide as a modern, intelligent society how we accept people different than us.
Some here will make a homophobic ass of themselves talking about it.
Let's try and rise above that.

Why wouldn't openly gay fly in Sparta?

Spartan Pederasty Wiki
Sparta, during its Dorian polis time, is thought to be the first city to practice athletic nudity, and one of the first to formalize pederasty.[72] The nature of this relationship is in dispute among ancient sources. Xenophon in his Constitution of the Lacedaimonians says that Spartan customs were unsuited to pederasty: a man might aim for idealized friendship with a boy but a sexual relationship was considered "an abomination" tantamount to incest.

So, to recap, in Sparta... Jerry Sandusky was ok to shower with the kids, but, the rhytmic slapping sounds were over the line. Got it.

To reiterate, I think that Sam's announcement was very shrewd. The NFL is all about marketing, and Sam is generating page hits that dwarf any other likely 4th-round pick. Hell, we have four pages of posts about a guy we'd otherwise not think twice about.

$$$$$. It's what makes NFL team owners sleep with a smile on their faces. I think Sam may have improved his draft status by at least a round or two by his announcement.

In related news, the Houston Texans are relocating to Key West and changing their name to "The Banana Hammocks".

Rumors of a surprise #1 pick abound.
