It's not "normal" though. With him potentially being the first this situation is the opposite of normal. This isn't a manufactured story. There is an extensive history or either overt or unspoken hostility toward homosexuality within the sport, and this athlete is willing to become the first to take it on openly. How is that not a legitimate story?

I didn't say it wasn't a legitimate story. What ESPiN is making it into is a legitimate spectacle. That's not going to help anyone down the road, regardless of how Michael Sam is treated. If this was post draft I'd say something similar, although by that point a team will be contractually obligated to him in some way. It's going to be very interesting to see if a borderline NFL D-end/OLB is going to be worth the many distractions this circus is going to bring.

Remember, in the draft, anything late 4th round and lower is considered to be practice squad and camp fodder. What happens if he doesn't make a team out of training camp? Does the storm swirl again with recriminations? And what if he isn't that good - the bulk of his special stats came against 2 of the 3 worst teams in the NCAA (Arky St./Florida) and a very mediocre one in Vandy? It isn't about what Michael Sam thinks at that point, but it will be speculation about what whichever NFL did when and how it relates to this announcement.

He's gay. Good for him. I still say Whoopie. I just hope he's a good enough player to make the idiots in the media who are making this a circus forget about it. I won't hold my breath for it though. In the end it's about what is done on the field, not what is done or said in the media.

If it is generating that many eyeballs, doesn't that prove that a lot of people care?

Look at the ESPN comments page. People like to be enraged either by the story or by people's reactions to the story. Like I said, ESPN has a nice little box to fit this story in and keep it going for a long time...Call it the Fox News model if you want, they've been doing it since the late 90s if not earlier.

"Incessant screeching"? If by that, you mean reporting the story and putting a positive spin on it, then yes, it helps. It may frustrate people who are embarrassed that homosexuality was ever a barrier to begin with, but it was a barrier nonetheless. And one I am glad will finally come down.

But rest assured that the "screeching" will probably get less and less each time this happens until it is more normal. But, by then, homosexuality will be more accepted... and that prospect scares some people.

You should know by now that's not how the media works.
I can appreciate that he has experienced discrimination -- and may very well experience it in the draft.
But at some point the media attention also becomes a self-fulfilling a prophecy... and the media loves that fact. They love that by creating a controversy here, they are guaranteeing they'll have another controversy to report in the future. It's how ESPiN, Faux News, MSNBC ... really all of them at this point ... make their living.
There's used car salesmen, lawyers, politicians... and then journalists at the very bottom with their so-called "journalistic integrity" and smarmy faux concern for other people.

Best thing about this is that people with post hateful comments from their own Facebook profile.

I haven't read a single story about this. I don't even know what the discussion in this thread is about. Why am I saying this? Because it has nothing to do with football. Good for him for coming out, but seriously, this shouldn't be a story. I get why it is. I just wish people would stop being prejudiced pieces of shit towards those who don't share their views/lifestyle.
