Of the dozens of Miami players named in Yahoo's now-infamous report from disgraced embezzler and Miami booster Nevin Shapiro, detailing a massive pattern of illegal benefits given to players over a period of nine years, 12 are still with the Hurricanes, awaiting word on the fate of their eligibility. That's a situation without a whole lot of extra time to be resolved, as the Hurricanes open up play just nine days from Thursday.

[MORE: Twelve current Miami players named in report]
To that end, the Miami Herald is reporting that all 12 players are expected to be named ineligible by the university soon -- but with a better resolution in mind:
If it hasn’t already, the University of Miami is expected to declare the 12 or more football players being investigated by the NCAA ineligible within the next week if the school wants the NCAA to rule on their reinstatement in time for the season opener Sept. 5 at Maryland.
UM had not declared the players ineligible as of early Wednesday afternoon, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.
This is, if nothing else, a precautionary step; by declaring the players ineligible, the school puts the players' fate in the hands of the NCAA rather than putting the players on the field and rolling the dice with NCAA penalties. The one single way Miami could face the most severe penalties from here on out is if the team knowingly lets players with eligibility problems compete anyway (look what knowingly putting Terrell Pryor and his friends back onto the field in 2010 did to Jim Tressel and Ohio State, for example). With a declaration of ineligibility for all players involved, Miami demonstrates a proper respect for NCAA rules and protocol.

As mentioned in the blog linked by OneBuckeye, it could be between 12 and 14 football players that Miami will suspend until the NCAA rules on their eligibility.

Remember that Shapiro reportedly named over 100 athletes, but Yahoo only went with 72 that received impermissible benefits, since they were able to have some form of corroboration for that many.

Shalala said yesterday that 15 athletes are being reviewed, and 1 of those is a basketball player. The 2 additional athletes not included in the 12 current football players that were named by Yahoo may or may not be football players, but they were probably included in the 'over 100' named by Shapiro but not identified in the Yahoo report.

Miami.Herald
The most significant news included in her address: the Miami athletic compliance staff and NCAA, through their joint effort, are reviewing the eligibility of 15 student-athletes ? two more than originally thought.

The current football players recently reported by Yahoo! Sports as being under investigation are Jacory Harris, Marcus Forston, Dyron Dye, Travis Benjamin, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Adewale Ojomo, Olivier Vernon, Vaughn Telemaque, Sean Spence, Marcus Robinson, JoJo Nicolas and Aldarius Johnson.

Eight Miami Hurricanes athletes declared ineligible

The University of Miami has declared eight student-athletes ? all believed to be football players ? ineligible and has asked the NCAA to initiate the reinstatement process, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

Quarterback Jacory Harris is one of the ineligible athletes, the source said.

At least four other football players were not declared ineligible by the university because it is believed the impermissible benefits each allegedly received from former UM booster Nevin Shapiro totaled less than $100 -- meaning they can pay it back, usually by donating to a charity.

In order for UM to ensure that those deemed ineligible have a chance to play Sept. 5 in the opener at Maryland without risking severe penalties by the NCAA, UM had to declare them ineligible. The NCAA will now review each player’s case and either reinstate them – every case is handled individually – or rule how many games they have to sit out.

For Al Golden it does. To this point he's clear in any of this nonsense. Knowingly playing ineligible players may not make things worse for the program as a whole, but it may well get Golden slapped with a show cause penalty from the NCAA.

I think Golden still gets a pass. It is not his job to rule on eligibility. JT got in trouble for withholding information, not for playing the kids. Unless Golden personally is keeping something to himself he plays whoever the AD and NCAA tells him he can play without consequence.
