Masoli and other Ducks' legal issues

They're pretty far past 'a few kids'...

Five. Are you under the impression there is rampant criminal activity in Eugene?

IF this trend continues on and on; then I think you and KL may have a point. But considering this has happened within 12 months, I'm willing to give the athletic department and Chip the benefit of the doubt.

I have a strong feeling the the Oregon Ducks hit their absolute peak under coach Chip Kelly on December 31, 2009.

In one sense I agree, but...

Nothing that happened on January 1 changed who the Ducks are. The Rose Bowl did not knock the Ducks down, it merely illuminated their current position for those who weren't previously aware of it.

Last fall:
RB Blount

In a span of about a month:
QB Masoli
RB James
WR Holland
LB Kaddu
LB Alonso
K Beard

incoming recruit Hill cheated and snuck in a 5th year in HS. Not Kelly's fault but it adds to the drama.

plus Cheerleader Maginnis :p

I don't think Oregon = thugs or that Kelly is a bad guy. I do think that Kelly undermining his own punishment with Blount hurts his credibility when he punishes someone, especially for a year.

Masoli had a history when he arrived at UO. Given Holland's comments, it would seem some on their squad find the discipline to be rather inconsistent. Blount was also suspended temporarily in the spring before the boise state meltdown & suspension.

I do agree. However, I don't know the stipulations that Kelly gave Blount. If he achieved said things; then I'm open to re-instatement. The biggest thing that bothered me with Blount's re-instatement was the timing. It shouldn't have been in the Civil War.

One major reason as to why I'm taking it easy on Chip is because none of these kids were his recruits. Thus, I'm willing to see if his kids do the same thing. Furthermore, I can't imagine having to deal with this type of junk in my first year of taking the helm. I'm sure he's learned his fair share of off-the-field coaching for a while.

Then he should be suspended indefinitely, not for a year. That was a big problem as well.

He's been at Oregon since 2007 as the OC, then the HC for 09.

He recruited 08 juco Blount, 08 juco Masoli, 09 James.

He accepted a transfer (from USC) from 06 WR Jamere Holland - who apparently was dismissed from USC, so perhaps that explains the quick dismissal over the facebook post.

Alonso & Kaddu were 08 LB recruits while he was the OC, so he wasn't directly involved there.

08 K Rob Beard is anyone's guess.

I agree. I do believe that Chip accepted responsibility on the changing of this mind. I don't think he did this in a prideful fashion as though he was the king of all decisions; but instead, stated that he learned things during the process as well.

I'm not knowledgeable of the inner workings of recruiting; but are you saying that Chip was the point man who recruited these players or are you simply putting it into a time frame? I know how long Chip has been there.

Just to clarify where I was coming from: even if an Ohio State Coach other than Coach Tressel recruited an athlete, it's on Coach Tressel's shoulders IF the athlete does something improper. Thus, when I'm talking about Chip Kelly, he wasn't the Head Coach when these kids came into the program. I place some of the blame on Belotti.

Blount committed about a month after Chip's first regular season as the OC at Oregon. Masoli committed much earlier but Kelly was the OC at the time. I don't know who the point man was on their recruitments, but the OC is going to have a big say in who they recruit at the QB & RB position.

Chip Kelly was the point man on LaMichael James.

I can understand that.

I realize this is probably going to cast me in a poor light, but I'll share anyway. If I had an ex-girlfriend come over to my apartment while I wasn't there in order to confront the female guest that was there; then I don't think I'd have to imagine too hard how things could escalate. I'm not condoning the actions that LaMichael took. I'm just saying that I can see removing the person from the premises, chasing them down when they take the keys to my car, etc. If he hadn't placed his hands on the girl; there wouldn't be a problem. He made poor decisions in a singular instance. He's also accepted responsibility, apologized to the girl, and requested that people leave her alone. It may come back to bite me in the ass later, but I just don't think he's that bad of an egg. Blount and Masoli on the other hand...

Anyway.

Shouldn't this tread title be updated from "accused of robbery" to "convicted" or "plead guilty and sentenced?" Or, has the thread now moved on to criminal aspects of the entire Duck football team...no longer limited to Masoli?

Ever been to Eugene? Its the nuttiest place on earth. I fly out there every so often for work. I went to a company picnic, only to find out that they are totally indifferent to public sex....And that was before I had to worry about stoners and the homeless.

Its like the Ann Arbor of the west coast.
