Lou Holtz (Official Thread)

I was overseas at the time and not really connected back home because of technology limitations back then, but I have heard it expressed repeatedly that Holtz led Ohio State to believe that he was interested in the job and then turned down the coaching job at Ohio State. My late father really resented him for that. So, perhaps that is a major source of the derision he receives on BP.

Perhaps it is the design of his job at ESPN. His "locker room pep talks" are simply pathetic, trite, and embarrassing. Who the hell is he to tell LSU how to come back from a defeat? His banter with May also detracts from any prestige he might have brought to the set. It also seems reasonable to say that the opinions he has been expressing on ESPN show little insight into the game.

If he loves Ohio so much, then I guess the question is, what has he done for Ohio. I mean, we've seen how Herbie started this Ohio high school football challenge. Did he endow a chair at Ohio State, put some scholarships into place, or do something else? I ask this honestly, because I don't know of anything he has done for Ohio except to put Ohio State on the schedule twice so we could deflate that image issue once and for all.

Good Gawd... it's a friggin TV show for ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES!! If you don't like it don't watch it. It is rather obvious most enjoy it.....

My recollection of this is quite different. Lou wanted the job, and wasn't offered and ultimately ended up at Minny. Our whole family talked about how we wanted Lou and it didn't happen...it was tOSUs choice.

Yeah, Lou has a scccchhhhhhtick at ESPN, just as everyone else does, but I respect Lou's accomplishments and he is a former Buckeye coach and I'll always remember him for that.

...and for his alleged comment to Woody when OJ scampered for that TD in the Rose Bowl...

And there you have it. I guess I have to apologize for my post last year...fans actually love Lou Holtz and the comments that he and his colleagues make are for our entertainment.

And, now, to show his more humorous side...

I wasn't even born then, so my knowledge comes from books and one particular interview. Lou was offered the job, but declined without even an interview. Then everybody turned to Bruce, who nobody knew. Thats how the nickname '"Earle" who?' came in.

On a TV show, Lou said that Woody Hayes actually called him about the job, but his eyes were elsewhere. So he politely declined, and Woody used colorful language upon hearing that, but eventually agreed with his decision.

I also read that NoD and USC competed over Lou, and the meeting with the grand priest of NoD (NoD was a good name in 2006/7 when ND had no D. But now they dont have either an O nor a D, so NoD just doesn't sound right. I propose NoDO or NoOD. Damn, anyone have any better name?) convinced him. I just checked the records, and there was a change of coaches at 1983 and 1987 @ USC. Lou started at 1986 @ NoD.

Not quite.

Lou wanted the job, but not enough to go through an interview.
He thought he should be given the job, tOSU wanted him to interview like other candidates.
He declined.

Anyway, you can't grind any corn with downstream water.

The more I watch Lou on ESPN the more I like him these days. Once you come to the realization that he's there strictly for entertainment value and are able to get past his homerism for ND and SoCar etc...He's pretty funny. He's actually given us more love than most anyone else has.

Besides, how can you possibly dislike someone who calls Mark May out as an idiot every time they grace the air.

Lou Holtz is the most knowledgeable college football man that ESPN has. When ESPN actually lets him talk, I find him to be informative and interesting. However, I believe that the higher-ups at ESPN think that the "average" viewer will only hear "BLAH BLAH BLAH I'M AN OLD PERSON BLAH BLAH BLAH I'M NOT YOUNG AND HIP AND THEREFORE I DON'T KNOW WHAT A SPREAD OFFENSE IS BLAH BLAH BLAH!" Therefore, we get Dr. Lou and Pep Talk Lou, instead of just Lou.

Mark May should be the one giving pep talks. Mark May should be the Dr. Phil of football. Lou Holtz should be allowed to give the intelligent football viewer audience the information that we deserve.

Lou has love for OSU still too, he was the only ESPN analyst to show the Buckeyes any love going into the game today. Lou had great respect for Woody too, he obviously learned much coaching with him. He also picked the Buckeyes to play in the NC game. He was not at the studio today because he was accepting a statue and award at ND for his '88 national championship. Man, the fans still love him, big "Louuuuu" chants throughout the stadium, and he was firing the players up for the game.
