Losing Early, Now What Needs to Happen - 2010 Chaos Theory

Some quick bye week halftime chaos, early games:

Purdue 10, Wisky 6. We love this. 'nuff said.

scUM 31, Zook 31. A scUM win is slightly to our benefit, as the human pollsters will give us more credit for being a perceived "improved" scUM. I'm still rooting for the Zookers.

Maryland 17, Miami 15. Really, Miami. You can f-ing help us out any day now.

MSU 21, Help Wanted U. 0. Irrelevant.

Auburn 21, Chattanooga 0. Auburn working hard to give Oregon and Boise an advantage in SoS. Hilarious.

The other OSU 17, Baylor dead. Great. Another one loss team that the computers will figure out a way to have vault past us. Root for a stirring Baylor comeback.

Just updating games so far and how things have changed.

12:00 PM ET No. 9 Wisconsin at Purdue - Purdue win/ Wisky loss
12:00 PM ET Minnesota at No. 14 Michigan State - Minnesota win SOS

12:00 PM ET No. 16 Iowa at Indiana - Iowa win for rank move up
12:00 PM ET Illinois at Michigan - Illinois win for rank move up - Almost
12:00 PM ET Maryland at Miami (FL) - Cryami for SOS
12:30 PM ET No. 21 Baylor at No. 17 Oklahoma State - Either way helps knock down SOS for a top team. - Push
1:00 PM ET Chattanooga at No. 2 Auburn - Chatt win
3:30 PM ET Washington at No. 1 Oregon - Washington win

3:30 PM ET No. 3 TCU at No. 5 Utah - Either or. Best scenario Utah win then NoD beats Utah.
3:30 PM ET Hawaii at No. 4 Boise State - Hawaii win
3:30 PM ET No. 6 Alabama at No. 10 LSU - Likely want LSU win with hopes of Ark win later over LSU and ALA win over Aub. If Ala wins, LSU out of BCS and likely sets up scenario where winner of ALA/AUB plays for SEC and title shot. ALA win and we root for Miss St next week to beat ALA.
3:30 PM ET No. 7 Nebraska at Iowa State - Iowa St win - Could have been a huge victory
3:30 PM ET North Carolina at No. 24 Florida State - NC win. OKLA SOS loss
3:30 PM ET Northwestern at Penn State - State Penn win SOS
4:15 PM ET Marshall at UAB - Marshall win SOS

5:00 PM ET No. 23 Nevada at Idaho - Idaho win rank down Nevada pre Boise game.
7:00 PM ET No. 8 Oklahoma at Texas A&M - A&M win
7:00 PM ET No. 18 Arkansas at No. 19 South Carolina - Either or. Likely want So Car to win to drop ALA win over Ark.
7:00 PM ET Oregon State at UCLA - UCLA win to knock down SOS for TCU and Boise.
8:00 PM ET No. 12 Missouri at Texas Tech - TTU win
8:00 PM ET No. 15 Arizona at No. 13 Stanford - Ariz win to boost Iowa SOS pre OSU/IOWA

About 50% today. Almost a huge BYE week.
Without any more help, likely top 10 of BCS next week.

1 Oregon
2 Auburn
3 TCU
4 Boise
5 LSU
6 Okla/Neb
7 Okla/Neb
8 Wisc
9 OSU
10 Stan

Helpful games left tonight. Okla is losing right now. If they lose OSU sits at 8 next week.

LSU still has Ark.
Neb still has the B12CG.
Oregon still has Ariz,Oreg St.
Aub has ALA and the SEC CG
We can jump Wisky and Boise.
If we can get to 4-5 by the CG week, we could jump to 2 with Aub/Neb losses.

I'm just not very sure why we would be justified in jumping Wisky. Our slightly superior non-conference SOS just doesn't really allow for the crossing out their head to head victory. Wisky needs to lose in order for us to have a National Title chance in the coming weeks. If they don't, I see very little reason for any of the human polls to justify having the Buckeyes ranked higher. The computers gotta do what they gotta do and I like the fact that you can't argue with their cold calculations as much, so if they want to rank us higher according to some SOS merits and all, then that's quite ok...

On the bright side, the last 3 games for Wisconsin all have some well-oiled offenses that can maybe just put up enough points to pull off an upset.

Although, I'm not entirely sure why Michigan State falls off behind Wisconsin given the identical records and Michigan State's h2h victory. Its confusing as all hell, but it is what it is.

2 reasons...

MSU has no Marquee victory
And MSU lost later and worse.

If OSU goes into Kinnick and totally dominates Iowa, then they can garner enough points in the BCS to jump Wisky. Plus we would beat 3 6+ win teams straight.

Michigan State has beaten with possibilities in (parentheses):

Wisconsin
at Michigan
Illinois
at Northwestern
Notre Dame (not sure where I fall on them for the season in terms of overall competitiveness and if they add to SOS or detract from it)
(at Penn State)

Wisconsin has beaten with possibilities in (parentheses):
at Iowa
Ohio State
Arizona State
(at Michigan)
(Northwestern)

Ohio State has beaten with possibilities in (parentheses):
Miami FL
at Illinois
(at Iowa)
(Penn State)
(Michigan)

It really just isn't in our cards this year. Our exclusive opponents dropped off. If we beat Iowa, Wisconsin will have also done that, if we beat Penn State (Sparty will also get that chance) and if we beat Michigan both MSU and Wisky will have possibly have done so as well. Our entire season rides on how well Miami FL can finish and drag our SOS up.

I understand that we can be ahead of Michigan State... but why would we be ahead of Wisky? Their marquee win is Ohio State then Iowa, then Michigan, then Northwestern and lastly Arizona State; Ohio States marquee win will be: Iowa, then Miami FL, then Penn State, then Michigan, then Illinois. I think our slate will have been better, but is it significantly such to override the head to head win?

Its a convoluted mess in the Big Ten with teams with identical records and nonidentical Strength of Schedules with head-to-head match-ups mixed in as well.

We are behind them now and rightfully so. If we DOMINATE Iowa, we will have a good chance to jump them due to timing of win and that they won by 1 point against Iowa and really should have lost. (If Iowa had a freaking clue about clock management.) I say a 14-21 point win over Iowa would perk the voters up and also SOS for us keeps going up.

Also add a large victory against 7-3 Ohio who could win the Mac. Cryami could still win the ACC (need lots of help). Wisky hasn't beaten a team that could win their Conference except us(which would be a wash). Voters vote for recent victories and comps take in the overall. In the polls thread I posted the Average wins of teams beaten and the comparison of that team to their comp average rank. It will have changed since so that is a good parameter of how the comps will shake out. Losses are the unmeasurable factor, but you can almost lump teams in groups by their losses and the Average.

Update of late games...

7:00 PM ET No. 8 Oklahoma at Texas A&M - A&M win
7:00 PM ET No. 18 Arkansas at No. 19 South Carolina - Either or. Likely want So Car to win to drop ALA win over Ark. - Wasn't relevant with ALA loss earlier
7:00 PM ET Oregon State at UCLA - UCLA win to knock down SOS for TCU and Boise.
8:00 PM ET No. 12 Missouri at Texas Tech - TTU win
8:00 PM ET No. 15 Arizona at No. 13 Stanford - Ariz win to boost Iowa SOS pre OSU/IOWA- Looks like Stanford is going to win up 42-17 3 min to go.

4 out of 5 puts us at 12-10 in games today. Pretty good for a BYE week.

So top 10 BCS prediction

1 Oregon
2 Auburn
3 TCU
4 Boise
5 LSU
6 Neb
7 Wisky
8 OSU
9 Stan
10 MSU/OK ST

My quick thoughts:

The two BCS Busters will need help to stay ahead of tOSU if we win out. Their CPU rank is dropping like a rock, with the exception of Nevada Boise is in trouble.

We probably need a Wisky loss, however, the voters may be kind about the fact that tOSU lost on the road, at night in a high energy game. It wasn't like the Sparty loss. And Wisky's CPU ratings will go down as tOSU goes up. So, if we stay within a single spot, the CPU may allow us to jump them. I don't see the voters putting us ahead though.

Also, I think it was to in our *gulp* favor for scUM to win, as we are benefited later on for them to beat Wiscuntsin. So, have the dickweeds from up north win all their games except the tOSU game, finish at 9-4 ranked 25th after a win against Wisky, all the sudden we get a huge CPU boost with potentially Iowa, Wisky and scUM ranked. And its worth noting that Nebraska took a SOS hit with Choklahoma and Texas losing. And with Mizzou losing tonight...things are definitely looking better now than they did before.

LSU/Auburn play, right? If so, we root for an Auburn win against LSU, followed by a Bama win against Auburn. The SEC CCG shouldn't make a huge difference as tOSU should stay above the winner either way. Couple that with a Boise loss to Nevada (:o) and we're golden

Keep the faith, GO BUCKS! We are NEVER out of the NC picture, we ARE the NC picture!!! :p

Auburn already beat LSU Bluff.

At this point the SEC is almost guaranteed 2 teams in the BCS. If Auburn wins out, they play for the title and LSU goes to the Sugar. If Auburn loses to 'Bama they still win the West and most likely win in the SECCG. In that case, Auburn goes the Sugar and LSU gets an at-large. If Auburn wins the Iron Bowl but loses the SECCG then an SEC East scrub goes to the Sugar bowl and either Auburn or LSU get an at-large. If Auburn loses the Iron Bowl, then loses the SECCG. Then an SEC East scrub goes to the Sugar bowl and LSU gets an at-large.

So that's the SEC.

TCU is probably going undefeated. If we sneak into the title game, it will be vs. them.

The last real shot to take out Oregon is Arizona and in that case even if Arizona wins, Oregon still wins the Pac-10 and Oregon goes to the Rose Bowl. Good thing about the Pac-10 is that Stanford is the next best team and they certainly won't pass enough folks in the top 10 to snatch an at-large even if they win out.

The BigX(II) is all kinds of fucked. Nebraska is the obvious favorite to win the conference and I see no way they could get a second team in. A&M has a shot to take down the 'Huskers in a few weeks and if that happens then who knows what the fuck is going to happen.

This weekend has been very good for Ohio State's chances to make it to a BCS bowl game. Something EXTREMELY out of the ordinary is going to have to happen for us to sneak into the title picture again. Bucky needs to lose a shocker, Boise needs to lose a shocker (Notre Dame, maybe?) and TCU needs to lose a shocker.

But. Stranger things have happened.
