London Olympics: "We're pretty much ready..."

Ooh, I just realized that the controversial tie for third means we'll get another Bela Karolyi rant later tonight! :groove:

That man is like a combination of Lou Holtz and the Swedish Chef.

:slappy: That is the truth. Even though he's hard to understand sometimes, he's great to watch. My favorite is when they always ask him "before going into this event, what would you say to them." He always gets so animated and mumbles over his own words

Congrats to Kayla Harrison. There are great individual stories across the games, but her's put a lump in my throat. It's clear that this competition and gold medal meant more to her than most. Read up on her if you haven't done so.

I couldn't agree more. I have never watched judo at anytime as faithfully as I did today. While her opponent in the finals was more than worthy of a Gold medal..Kayla seemed to have destiny on her side and I couldn't be happier for any USA Olympic team member.

...There was a tie for bronze in Harrison's division in judo - they gave one to both 3rd place finishers...
Just a point of information: I noticed the same thing with another judo competition so I looked at another... and another... and another. ALL judo competitions award two bronze medals. I looked up the competition format and here is what it says on London2012.com:

"Athletes compete in weight categories and are divided into two groups within these categories. Competition is on a knockout system that eventually determines the two finalists who compete in the gold medal match.

In each event, the four defeated quarter-finalists compete in two repechage contests. The winners then compete against the two defeated semi-finalists to determine the winners of the two bronze medals."

Now on to real things... the USATF team got off to a great start this morning:
  • All 3 men's shot putters qualified for the finals
  • Kibwe Johnson qualified for the finals in the hammer
  • 2 of the 3 men's steeplechasers qualified for the finals
  • All 3 women's 400m runners won their opening heats to qualify for the semi-finals
  • All 3 men's 400m hurdlers qualified for the semi-finals
  • Hyleas Fountain is 2nd in the women's heptathlon after 2 events
