I watched a lot of the memorial service for Bo last week on ESPN News (I don't think I could have handled watching it if TSUN had just won The Game). I was actually impressed with the speech that Carr gave. He talked for about 10 minutes, and told a couple of humorous stories about Bo. I didn't remember that ND had offered Carr the Defensive Coordinator job back in the Lou Holtz days (maybe it wasn't publicized). He went into Bo's office to let him know he had to consider the offer because of the money, and Bo said "NO - you're staying at Michigan".

Carrr told another story about the team visiting the White House in 1998, after they won the AP NC in the 1997 season. That was the time that Clinton was immersed in the Lewinsky scandal, and Bo refused to travel with the team, again saying 'NO' when the travel plans were being arranged.

Anyway, we like to pick on Carr, but he had a fine season. His team played well in the largest setting ever for The Game. The quality of the play, and the importance of The Game, only served to benefit both teams when the entire country was watching.

Since we're confident that Jim Tressel can get the best of the matchups against Carr, I'm glad that he's still the coach of TSUN. But I have to admit that he earned some respect from me in 2006; for the performance of his team and for his speech in their stadium in Ann Arbor last week.

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - A top anti-addiction official in the western Canadian province of Alberta skimmed nearly half a million dollars from his employer to feed his own gambling habit, the province's top auditor said on Friday.

Auditor General Fred Dunn alleged in a report that Lloyd Carr, who ran the tobacco-reduction unit of the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission, used five false contracts to scam C$441,298 ($390,000) from the government agency, which funds programs and treatment services for alcohol, drug and gambling addictions.

The auditor's report said Carr, who could not be reached for comment, had admitted to misappropriating the funds and using part of the cash to put a downpayment on a house, pay household expenses and repay a vehicle loan.

About C$116,000 was said to have been withdrawn from automatic teller machines in casinos.

Carr was fired in September. Criminal charges have not been filed, although police have been notified.

I thought it was funny to see his name in it. I thought you might get a kick out of it.

I knew it wasn't scUM's Carr right away. Not enough L's

Yea, but that continuous whining to the refs each and every game has got to stop

A little something I wrote for Voyd (my apologies to Conway Twitty)

My name should be trouble, my name should be woe
For beatings by Tressel are all that I know
Yeah, lonely, lonely blue boy is my name.

My life has been hell, my team has been shit
God how I miss that hot tub sellin' hick
Yeah, lonely, lonely blue boy is my name.

Well, I'm so, I'm so afraid of tomorrow,
And so tired, so tired of today
They said that John was the answer,
But John has gone away.

I'm writing this letter to someone unknown
If you can get John his job back, your likley to get blown
Well, lonely, lonely blue boy is my name/

Remember, lonely, lonely blue boy is my name...

Other than the 1997 undefeated season, Michigan has lost at least three games every year since Lloyd Carr has been head coach (except for a two loss season in 1999 and a one loss season in 2006, bowl game pending).

They have only gone undefeated at home five times during his twelve year tenure (1997, 2000, '03, '04, '06).

They have lost eight regular season non-conference games and six bowl games against non conference opponents in those twelve years. That's also twelve non-conference losses in the past nine seasons since the undefeated season.

Michigan has gone 5-6 in their bowl games during this span.

Lloyd Carr has lost a combined 35 games during his twelve year reign. That's an average of just over three losses per season (and that includes an undefeated season). They have also allowed an average of 28 points per game in those 35 games and have lost by an average of a touchdown (seven points) in those 35 losses. Since the undefeated season Michigan has lost 27 games for an average of 3.25 losses per season in those 9 years.

They have had a .737 winning percentage during the eight seasons since they went undefeated. That is below their historically NCAA best .744 winning percentage all time.

Finally, the most telling stat is Michigan's record against their biggest rivals since the shared National Title in 1997. They are 4-4 against Notre Dame, 9-3 against Michigan State, and 6-6 against Ohio State. That's a combined winning percentage of just over 60% against their three biggest rivals during Carr's tenure. Since the Undefeated season Michigan has gone 3-4 against Notre Dame, 7-2 against Michigan State (which includes a triple overtime win in 2004 and an overtime win in 05), and 3-6 against Ohio State. That's a .500 record against the schools greatest rivals. He also has a 1-5 record against the Buckeyes since Jim Tressel took over the Ohio State program in 2001.

The latest update to Lloyd Carr's contract includes a change in language that would make it easier for the University of Michigan football coach to retire from the job after the 2007 season.

I guess GBW won't be whining as much anymore when recruits are told by competitors (cough ND cough) that Carr is retiring soon.

Another Dennis Dodd article (1 Jun 07) on Carr & Crowe:

Ann Arbor Confidential: Wolverines, Carr enjoy rites of spring

Add actor Russell Crowe to the crazy spring of Lloyd Carr's Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Russell Crowe and Lloyd Carr are buds. OK, that's weird enough. The Gladiator and the deadpan Wolverine coach yucking it up.
Now try to wrap your mind around this image: Lloyd Carr in a water-hose fight with former star defensive end Alan Branch.
I guarantee you, I get wet," said Michigan's 62-year-old coach, sounding more like a wet T-shirt night participant than a football icon.
It's spring, when college coaches tend to let down their guard, if not their close-cropped hair. They relax, if only briefly. Light up a stogie. Spend time with -- what are your names again? -- the wife and kids. Go on vacation.
But this, at Michigan? The Fort Knox of college football? Yes, the athletic department could mint its own coins, but we're talking more about the walls that keep football information in, and the world out.
Our images of Michigan football are Hail to the Victors, Bo, The Big House and those always-rollicking weekly press conferences. Who knew Carr was recently in San Diego with his wife screening Crowe's new movie 3:10 to Yuma? Or that he then followed Crowe over to Australia to mingle with the actor's rugby team, the South Sydney Rabbitohs?
"He's a hell of a guy," Carr said. "Honestly, I thought I'd probably see him once or twice."
Instead, they were pals for most of the nine days Carr was Down Under. The last day and a half was spent at Crowe's ranch an hour north of Sydney. The invitation from Crowe came after he got word that Carr had used Cinderella Man as a motivational tool during last year's training camp.
Carr was enamored with the underdog story of Crowe's character, Jim Braddock. Crowe's people got hold of Carr's person, administrative assistant Jennifer.
"I said, 'Sure, he's on the phone,'" Carr said. "I get on the phone, and it was him."
This is not the picture of uptight coach and program. It has a heart. A lot of it locked behind Bo Schembechler's office, which has been largely left untouched since the great coach's death on Nov. 17.
It has desire. The program with one of the game's greatest lineman traditions has never won an Outland. Returning All-American Jake Long is the Big Ten's best offensive lineman.
An 11-victory season fueled by one of Michigan's great defenses collapsed with yet another loss to Ohio State. This year the Wolverines should start the season in the top five and be favored to win the Big Ten.
