Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

Everybody opts out of their contract:

Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem are joining teammate LeBron James in opting out of their contracts with the Miami Heat, creating an NBA-record $55 million in salary cap room, sources told ESPN.com.

The Heat also have been in trade talks involving Norris Cole in the wake of drafting point guard Shabazz Napier last Thursday, with the goal of clearing Cole's $2 million salary off the books, a move that would free up more cap space.

Just how much less money will they take to allow Miami to sign some additional free agents and who will they sign. NBA soap opera: As The Stomach Turns... This will play out and headline the sports pages for the next month or so.

And there ya go. All three are going to restructure their deals to allow Miami to upgrade their roster. The dream is over Cavs fans.

I read Lebron wants a max deal. We'll see how much of a cut Bosh is willing to take if another team throws a max deal at him. Wade fucked himself. I'd offer him 10 mil over 2 years if I was the Heat. No way Wade sees the the money he just threw away over the rest of his career.

Bingo. Wade just destroyed himself financially. I hope potentially winning another title on LBJ's coattails is worth tens of millions.

On a related note, I'm sure certain BPers who are such fanboys that they can't see more than a foot in front of their noses are pleased by this news.

yeah, it doesn't make much sense that he wants a max deal now. How can they go out and sign anybody if they have to give half the cap to James? Maybe I don't understand the salary structure.

I don't care one way or another but never underestimate Riley's ability to fuck the Heat for the future... Wade will get his money, it will be over 4 or 5 years. The real question is what will Bosh do if someone throws a Max deal. Again I expect the Heat to offer slightly more money over a longer deal much the same as Wade... Again they will be in cap hell in a few years but Riley doesn't give a shit

Not saying he won't be making less money with his new deal, but receiving $10 million over the next 2 years (one of the figures that was mentioned) is hardly destroying himself financially. If it is, I'd love to be destroyed financially. I'd be set for life.

In that case Lebron better have an opt out in 2 years if he signs a max deal now. If the Heat have to pay Wade 10 mil and Bosh 15 mil a year for the next 5 years any retooling will only last a couple more years before everything falls apart. Unless they hit the jackpot with every draft pick they have they will have no good young talent coming in.

IMO Lebron would be better off finding a team with good players that are younger than him so he will be the one that gets old while the younger players come into their prime. As long as he is with the Heat he will be the youngest good player they have.

I agree. Honestly, (and ironically) I think he's being too loyal in this situation. It's too bad for us that he chose loyalty to his friends over loyalty to his city... again.

He's pretty much screwing up his chance at getting quality players around him. Sure, Miami has 55 million to spend:

Bron-22
Bosh-10?
Wade-10?
Shabazz-2?

You're not going to put much around them with only 11 million left to spend.

Reports Saturday indicated two things: 1. LeBron James intends to ask for the max from the Heat, despite how that limits what they can do. If that's the case, the Heat are tying up roughly $26 million in cap space (along withNorris Cole's $2 million) right off the bat. Other early reports indicate that Chris Bosh is willing to take a paycut, but only to between $15 and $16 million, according to an ESPN report. So James, Bosh and Cole set them at a combined $43 million at least, out of a total cap of $63 million. Throw in the hold for first-round pick Shabazz Napier, and that's $44 million, roughly.

So scrape that number back down to roughly $21 million, plus Bosh's $16 mission, plus Cole's $2 million, plus another million for Shabazz Napier, and you wind up at $41 million.

So where does that lead Wade? Wade's willing to sacrifice for Miami. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have opted out. But how much? He was owed $42 million over the next two seasons if he hadn't opted out. Would he take a four-year deal that pays him the same money over more years, at $10.5 million? Then you're at $51.5 million with $11.5 million and the room exception ($2.6 million) left to find a quality roster. We're talking another seven players in that kind of space.

one projected roster :slappy:
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Shabazz Napier, Norris Cole, Steve Blake, Rodney Stuckey, Ray Allen and Josh McRoberts. That's nine players with three-to-four more to sign to minimum deals. Udonis Haslem presumably comes back for the minimum; that's 10. Fill in two more veterans like Al Harrington and Elton Brand on veteran minimum deals, and there you go.
