Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

With No Ring, James Is Still No Jordan

Behind the Continuing Quest to Turn the NBA's Biggest Endorser Into a Global Icon

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AdAge.com) -- Lebron James is the highest-paid endorser in the National Basketball Association, earning an estimated $25 million a year for his off-the-court marketing associations.

Yet his jersey is only the No. 3 seller worldwide this year behind Kevin Garnett of the 2008 champion Boston Celtics and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, who lost to the Celtics in the NBA Finals. In fact, as he prepares for his sixth season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mr. James' No. 23 jersey has been the league's best-seller just once -- in 2003-04, following his rookie season.
Moral of the story: Everybody loves a winner, and in some respects that's what it's going to take for Mr. James to achieve his stated goal two years ago of becoming a global icon, along the lines of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali, by the 2008 Summer Olympics.

"I think there's something to that, yes," said Maverick Carter, Mr. James' lifelong friend and the CEO of the basketball superstar's marketing company, LRMR Marketing, based in their hometown of Akron, Ohio. "To an extent, championships define athletes."

OSU Insider: LeBron eager to support Bucks

Roadell Hickman/The Plain DealerLeBron James will join ESPN's college preview show on Saturday morning to show his support for the Buckeyes' showdown against Penn State.
COLUMBUS -- Whenever LeBron James wants to burnish his credibility as an Ohio sports fan, he knows where to turn. "I would've been a Buckeye. I'm a big Ohio State fan," the Cavaliers star said Thursday.
So Saturday, the morning after the Cavs play an exhibition game with Washington at Ohio State's Value City Arena, James is scheduled to show up on the set of ESPN's College GameDay in Columbus and talk some college football and make some picks.
After his moments of wearing New York Yankees caps and hugging Dallas Cowboys, maybe a big Block O cap and some old-time Woody glasses are in order.
With the Buckeyes facing off with Penn State on Saturday night, an ESPN spokesman said it was James that reached out to the network about making the cameo. Three weeks ago, country music star Kenny Chesney made a similar appearance at Vanderbilt.

While he's made Browns fans and Indians fans wonder, James' allegiance to his homestate university has never been in doubt. He has said several times that had he played college basketball, Columbus would have been his home.

I think one of the loudest moments of the game last night was when LBJ was pumping up the crowd on the sidelines and they showed it on the big screen...

Love the fact that LBJ keeps associating himself with the buckeyes...Now I would just love him to do it even more with the basketball team...

The Nets were once considered the odds-on favorite to get James, possibly the game?s most transcending player. He is a close friend to the rapper Jay-Z, a part-owner of the Nets

But the team?s planned move to Brooklyn is at a standstill, which could significantly lessen the chances of James becoming a Net. That is the view of Sonny Vaccaro, the former shoe executive who keeps tabs on his former ABCD campers, James included. Vaccaro said he thought James would end up with the Knicks.

James opens door to exit from Cavs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Although his free agency is still two years away, LeBron James won't hesitate to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers if another franchise offers the superstar a better chance to win multiple NBA titles.
"I think you do what is best for you and you do what is best for your career," James said last night when asked about his sense of loyalty to the Cavaliers before they played the New Jersey Nets. "I go out and I play hard, and that's loyalty.
"It's hard because it's a business. (The) franchise is going to do what is best for the franchise, you know. When a player does what is best for the player, it always comes back on us; I am going to look bad. If a franchise decides to give up on a player, it's OK."

Why not get some fucking players around him?

They have the third best record in the NBA. I'd say Ferry is doing as good of a job as a person can do build a team in Cleveland. I'd expect another big move by the trading deadline this year as well, but so far in the past year he has traded a bunch of stiffs for some decent players without hurting their long term ability to have cap space. All this Lebron is going to leave crap needs to stop for a year and a half.

The Cavs can stand pat. This year Snow's contract and Wally's contract
expire, leaving the Cave 20 million a year to sign a better player or two.
They also have a first round pick to get lucky with.

I think they're enough over the cap that 20 mil won't allow them to do anything this off season. It's next year when Z, Ben, and Lebron come off the books (temporarily) that they will have money to spend. If they want to add a piece before the summer of 2010 they will need to trade the expiring contracts. I'm just not sure what piece I would want at this point.

The Ant?nio McD rumor coming to the Cavs seems to have died down pretty fast or have I missed something.
You want to talk about a guy who made a lot of money off of high school kids and continued to do so is the above "person"

you did. the Cavs have offered him more than any other team interested right now. it still remains whether or not he'll take less to go back to detroit. he'd be leaving well over $10 million on the table by going back to Detroit. He left $9 million to take a buyout. Detroit can only offer him $1.9 million, which will probably be the base for any deals extending beyond this year. Cleveland can offer him about $5 million.

so, he's 34 and just gave up $9 million. If he wants to recoup any of that, he wouldn't resign with Detroit.

But, given the amount of times that pro athletes have spurned Cleveland for $$$, it seems fitting that when Cleveland is on the other side of the equation, the guy will go home for less money.

Ben said he thinks he's going back to Detroit. Hopefully the Cavs can crush them tonight and make him change his mind since he wants to play for a team that can win it all.
