More years and more money means nothing. If you think Cavs management can keep LBJ in Cleveland with smart personnel decesions, that makes sense.
But Cleveland will not even come in the same vacinity money-wise as to what LeBron can make in NY. LeBron will have to leave millions of dollars on the table to stay in Cleveland. The marketing dollars in New York are astronomical in comparison to Cleveland.
LeBron currently makes 3-4 x's more money in endorsements than his NBA contract. His NBA salary (max deal/max years) will be more in Cleveland, but it is peanuts in comparison to the marketing dollars. If it becomes a business decesion and about the money, Cleveland has little chance. Hopefully a great team is in place and LeBron feels Cleveland is the best place to win a championship(s). Really, the best chance for LeBron to stay IMO, is for Cleveland to win a title this year or next year. He'd look very greedy to leave a championship team for the dollars in NY.
Hoopshype.com reported this morning the plan is already in place for New York to offer LeBron and Bosh max deals, and have enough room under the cap to sign Steve Nash(he won't get a max deal, and will only have a few years of decent bball left). That's their goal right now. Cleveland needs to put even more talent around LBJ and make LeBron feel like he's walking into a worse situation in New York to have any chance.
And no matter what you think of the Knicks management, in 2010 they will be in a position to basically recreate their roster. It doesn't take a good GM to offer 2 superstars max deals, sign a few role players, and win titles. And I think Donnie Walsh is pretty respected amongst NBA circles....this isn't Isiah Thomas' project anymore.
I just hope Danny Ferry can make the situation in Cleveland to good to walk away from.
