Leap to Europe for Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James possible but highly unlikely

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 Bill Livingston
Plain Dealer Columnist

It would be unthinkable for a top-level NBA star to leave and play in Europe. (But if anyone did, it's not hard to imagine it would be LeBron James.)
Just as it was unthinkable for an American Olympic team with NBA players to lose the gold. (Bronze in 2004.)
Just as it was unthinkable for an international player to be the NBA's Most Valuable Player (Dirk Nowitzki, 2007) or to be the NBA's top draft pick (Yao Ming, Andrew Bogut, Andrea Bargnani).

And this is one of the many reasons why I cant stand to watch pro sports. All about the money and not the dedication to a city and its fans, who pay there salarys.

There used to be a time when the greats like Jordan(early years), Johnson, Bird, ect, would not think about leaving for another team and wearing another jersey. And would simply reply to a question about playing somewhere else as "My dedication is to the Cleveland fans and the city no where else".

The athlete hasn't changed. Just the dollars available.

LeBron top dog for U.S. As Kobe is being Kobe, James is leader
By Pete Thamel
New York Times

Published on Thursday, Aug 21, 2008
BEIJING: Heading into these Olympic Games, as American men's basketball began its great image overhaul, two questions lingered over the group that has become known as the Redeem Team.
The first was whether the United States could win the gold medal. And while that will not be answered until Sunday, one does not have to be an oracle to figure it out.
The second was how the alpha-dog dynamic between the planet's two brightest stars, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, would play out. That answer, too, has been as clear as the U.S. dominance in this tournament.
From his persistent vocal leadership to his rugged rebounding to his ability to drive to the hoop at will, James has outplayed Bryant. He has played multiple positions, emerged as the vocal leader and has better statistics.
And while Bryant has not played poorly, he has continued to play like he is on his NBA team instead of adapting and adjusting to his more talented Olympic teammates. James has stood out precisely because he has blended in so well.

LeBron James to be featured in new documentary

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer Sep 2, 5:54 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (AP)?LeBron James has gone from the gold-medal stand to the silver screen.
The Cavaliers? megastar, fresh off helping the U.S. basketball team win gold at the Beijing Olympics, will be at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend for the debut of ?More Than A Game,? a documentary chronicling his rise to stardom and how he and four childhood friends overcame long odds to win a national championship in high school.
Combining footage taken during James? career at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in nearby Akron, along with one-on-one interviews by writer/director Kris Belman, home videos, and personal family photographs, the film is about much more than basketball. At its core is a story of friendship, loyalty and love.

LeBron, prep pals set to hit big screen Documentary on historic No. 1 St. V-M team debuts
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Thursday, Sep 04, 2008
In the spring of 2003, the ongoing spectacle of LeBron James and the St. Vincent-St. Mary boys basketball team had become not only one of the biggest sports stories in the nation, but also quite a soap opera.
That soap opera is about to play out on the silver screen.
Everyone wanted a piece of James ? for his amazing play on the court as a senior and for the swirling controversies and story lines that came with the uncharted territory.
Fans crammed every public appearance across the country. National media outlets camped out at the high school. Representatives from shoe companies moved into Akron-area hotels. Competing agents came offering loads of cash. Potential business partners angled for attention by sending gifts to
James and family members.

Any true CLEVELAND FAN cannot possibly like Lebron James. He roots for the yankees, cowboys, and as a child, the bulls. What a freakin' front runner!! Ahhh I wish he'd take a offer with Russia or China and see how fun it would be playing in a communist nation. Maybe he'd even pull a Becky Hammon, and play for their national team. Wow that'd be great, just keep stabbing us loyal Cleveland Fans in the back. WONDERFUL!

So........ Cavs fans shouldn't like Lebron? He's not the reason for their success or anything. :tongue2:

Lol, yeah that's the problem.. He's the only reason for their success. Not much of a TEAM. I admit he's a great player, just not someone to carry the name "Cleveland" on his chest as he roots for the hated Yankees.

Well, I would imagine that a whole bunch of people care. I don't really care, personally. It's not really a good way to respect the people who pay and praise you.

I'm not a huge basketball fan so I really don't care at all. Just seems like he's liking the teams that are popular to like, which is fairly annoying.

You do realize how bad Cleveland sucked before LeBron got there, right? It's been pretty much a 180 degree turn.

Cavaliers: Cleveland Cavaliers Season Summaries

2000-2001: 30-52 missed playoffs
2001-2002: 29-53 missed playoffs
2002-2003: 17-65! missed playoffs
2003-2004: 35-47 missed playoffs - first year for James
2004-2005: 42-40 missed playoffs
2005-2006: 50-32 reached Conference semifinals
2006-2007: 50-32 reached NBA Finals
2007-2008: 45-37 reached Conference semifinals

Do you want to drive him out of town? Indeed, typical Cleveland fans would rather whine about his childhood rooting allegiances and heap unfair expectations upon their teams (see 2008 Indians; soon to be 2008 Browns) than be happy with actual success for once! It's never enough...
