Four things I think about LeBron James . . .

Thursday, March 20, 2008

1. James has lived up to all of the hype associated with him since he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated while still in high school. He was projected as the next big thing to come into the league and he has reached that level. I remember after his rookie year, the common comment was, "He's only 19, I can't imagine what he'll be like three, four, five years from now." Well those years are here now and James, in his fifth season, is having his best season.

Terry Pluto on LeBron James

Posted by "]Terry Pluto March 21, 2008 01:00AM

At 23, LeBron James is on the verge of becoming the leading scorer in the history of the Cavaliers. He's been a four-time All-Star and led the franchise to its only appearance in The NBA Finals. Fans across the world know James for his dunks, for his commercials, for leading the NBA in scoring this season.
"They know LeBron as a superstar," said Pam Walker. "A while ago, my daughter said that -- hey, LeBron is a superstar."
Pam Walker laughed.

ESPN - Toronto vs. Cleveland - Recap - March 21, 2008
ESPN.com said:
LeBron claims Cavs' scoring crown en route to win over Raptors

CLEVELAND (AP) -- LeBron James walked to the center of the floor as fans who have watched him grow from local teenage prodigy to NBA superstar drowned him in cheers.

As they stood and screamed, James returned their love by blowing kisses.

The kid from nearby Akron has done it all so quickly, in the blink of an eye.

From the franchise's top pick to its top scorer -- in less than five years. "The crazy thing about it is that he's 23," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. "Absolutely amazing."

LeBron speculation just a bit premature

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Wednesday, May 21, 2008
The paint had barely dried on LeBron James' masterpiece in Game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference semifinals and already the speculation had begun.
I'm talking about your superstar media types. The ones who, within a day of the Cleveland Cavaliers' ouster at the hands of the Boston Celtics, were postulating endlessly about whether LeBron will be leaving for a brighter stage in a couple of years.

It was as if they had a script prepared and couldn't wait for the Cavs to fall out of the playoffs so they could practice their tired lines. It's as if they are rooting for it to happen.
Mind you, LeBron can't go anywhere for two more seasons, but here comes ESPN's Steven A. Smith, citing anonymous sources "close to LeBron," saying it's all but a done deal that LeBron winds up with either the New York Knicks or New Jersey (soon to be Brooklyn) Nets.
It seemed every talk-show host in America had an opinion. (WLW's Doc Rodgers, the former Reds executive, probably had one, too, but I couldn't listen anymore after he didn't know what side of Chicago the Cubs played on. Hint: It's North.)
Hey, if it happens, it happens.

LeBron and SpongeBob form an unlikely team

By Tom Withers
Associated Press

Tuesday, July 01, 2008
AKRON ? LeBron James has a new teammate who's just as popular. The guy has a few holes in his game. Oh, and he lives in a pineapple under the sea.
SpongeBob SquarePants won't help James win any NBA titles, but the Cavaliers' superstar has paired up with Nickelodeon, the home of SpongeBob and his ocean-dwelling cartoon chums, to raise awareness about the environment.
Beyond the global-awareness message ? part of Nickelodeon's Big Green Help campaign ? James is hoping to educate kids on the importance of exercise.

Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James' departure in 2010 nothing but speculation

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

In two years, it's a done deal: LeBron James absolutely, definitely without question will be playing for the New Jersey soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets. Gotta be, because James is big buds with Nets minor owner Jay-Z.
Wait a minute, he wears a Yankees cap and once said Madison Square Garden was one of his favorite arenas. That settles it. In the summer of 2010, James will be signing with the Knicks.
Listen to the talking heads on TV, most of whom don't believe James actually likes Northeast Ohio. They can't imagine anyone really wanting to live here. We're Devil's Island, only with worse weather. So James has to leave, because they would leave if they were James.

Bud Shaw's Sports Spin: LeBron may love N.Y., but Knicks, Nets aren't lovable

LeBron James told media at a USA Basketball function that New York was his favorite city and Brooklyn his favorite borough.

Did you see James play to the fans? He ran to the crowd like he'd just been selected to guess the cost of a toaster oven on "The Price is Right."
Some saw this as another shot across Danny Ferry's bow, reminding the Cavs GM that he's on the clock.
The question they might want to ask is this: What if James is messing with everybody, New Yorkers included? What if this is another form of the remote control Hummer from his high school days?
James signed a $100 million Nike deal out of high school, so I think he'll be able to continue to afford the co-pays on doctor visits even if he never plays a day in New York.

A King's touch adds a dose of royalty to Akron's program

Updated: July 16, 2008

AKRON, Ohio -- The four LeBron James banners hanging over James A. Rhodes Arena's court at the University of Akron were on loan for the James' Nike-sponsored skills academy the first week of July.
Akron coach Keith Dambrot joked that maybe he should keep them up for the season.
But he's not really kidding. James' shadow is hanging -- figuratively and literally -- over the Akron program in a way that Dambrot hopes will only loom larger.
The NBA All-Star, two-time Olympian and Akron native never attended a class at Akron or any other university. But he has adopted his hometown school as his alma mater so much so that the Zips are beginning to benefit in a variety of ways.
