LeBron sprains ankle in Olympic scrimmage

Associated Press

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

LAS VEGAS ? As Team USA's practice ended, LeBron James reclined on a table with trainers tending to his sprained right ankle.
A horde of television cameramen surrounded James and the trainers before team officials shooed them away.
The Americans described the injury as minor. It occurred Tuesday, July 22, when James landed on Kevin Durant's foot during a closed scrimmage between Team USA and a select squad of young NBA players at Valley High School.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski said he would know more today, after James has had a chance to rest.
"He thinks it's a mild sprain," Krzyzewski said. "Our trainers think it's a mild sprain. So we'll find out tomorrow. But I don't think it's anything serious. Obviously, we'll look and see what happens tomorrow."

LeBron guarantees Olympic title

NEW YORK (AP) -- No more bronze medals for LeBron James. This time he's coming home with gold -- and that's a guarantee.
So he says, anyway.
James made his guarantee in a Time magazine story that hits newsstands Friday. The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar is featured on one of the covers of the Olympic preview issue.
After comparing the feeling of receiving a gold medal on the podium to opening a prized gift on Christmas morning, James was asked if that meant he would lead the Americans to the title.
"Absolutely," James responded.
Asked if he guaranteed it, he repeated, "Absolutely."

I enjoyed watching him flash Roc-a-fella hand symbols to every side of the court during their practice the other day.

Looking awesome for Cleveland......

LeBron better, but will sit out game Cavaliers star predicts Olympic gold
Published on Thursday, Jul 24, 2008
From Beacon Journal wire services

U.S. forward LeBron James likely will miss Friday's exhibition game against Canada as he recovers from a mild right ankle sprain.
James shot baskets on the sidelines but was held out of a scrimmage at Valley High School on Wednesday in Las Vegas.
''If the gold medal game was tomorrow, he'd play,'' coach Mike Krzyzewski said. ''But we're not playing the gold medal game, or a medal round game right now. So we would rather be cautious right now.
''I would say right now LeBron wouldn't play on Friday,'' Krzyzewski said. ''I don't think that's a wise decision, especially if he hasn't practiced.''
The Cavaliers star injured his ankle when he landed on Kevin Durant's foot during a Tuesday scrimmage between Team USA and a select squad of young NBA players. James said it improved overnight, and he moved without a limp after reporters were admitted to the gym at the end of practice.

Jill Greenberg for TIMEArticle

Buzz O.K., world, pin this one on your locker-room wall. LeBron James is picturing himself on the Beijing medal stand, gold draping his gargantuan chest. "It's going to be like waking up on Christmas Day," says James, the Cleveland Cavalier and global icon who led the NBA in scoring this season. "All you dreamed about this whole month was having that bike you wanted, and you get down to your living room ? it's there. It's like one of the greatest things that has ever happened to you." So you're going to bring a hoops title back home to the U.S., the country that gave birth to the game, reared it and then lost the ball to more graceful global neighbors? "Absolutely," James responds. Guarantee it? "Absolutely."

Is LeBron's guarantee good as gold? Cavs star's teammates ready to back up boast
By Brian Mahoney
Associated Press

Published on Friday, Jul 25, 2008
LAS VEGAS: LeBron James' teammates have their own guarantee: They'll help the U.S. star try to back up his boast.
And none seemed to have much trouble with James' promise of an Olympic gold medal, which appeared in a Time magazine story that hit newsstands today.
''You know what, I've never really understood the big deal about guaranteeing a win,'' Dwyane Wade said after practice. ''I mean, we all feel we're going to win, so what's the difference with him saying we're going to win?
''They had on ESPN 'King-sized guarantee.' Well, we all guarantee that we're going to go over there and we're going to win. We're not guaranteeing we're going to lose. You're supposed to feel that you're going to win every game. You're not going over there to do nothing but win the gold. And that's what our vision is, that's what we're thinking, then say it.''

Prediction for gold was old

Friday, July 25, 2008
When LeBron James told Time magazine the U.S. would win the gold in Beijing, TV, radio and newspapers around the country made a note of his Namath-like prediction.
Yes, sir, it was bold all right - the boldest month-old guarantee in sports history.
In a June interview with Mary Schmitt Boyer of The Plain Dealer, James talked of how much he was looking forward to the Beijing Games. Included was the following exchange:

LeBron's options in 2010 and breaking a promise to myself

Posted by "]Dan Labbe, cleveland.com August 07, 2008 12:25PM

I said I wouldn't do this. I wouldn't write about LeBron James leaving the Cavaliers in 2010. But then Chris Broussard, one of my favorite NBA writers, wrote this article about LeBron James considering European offers. Bob over at CavsBoard wrote an outstanding response. Rick over at WFNY pretty much summed up my feelings about the whole thing. And TrueHoop waxes poetic on the topic as well.
medium_340x.jpg

Do you recognize either of these players? Me neither. That pretty much sums up why LeBron James playing in Europe is a bad idea.

If you're like me, it just feels like people are throwing, well, you-know-what against the wall and seeing what sticks. LeBron and Jay-Z. LeBron drops 50 at the Garden. LeBron wants to be a global icon so he'd go play in Europe. I'm sure if LeBron James has a huge two weeks during the Olympics the rumors of his departure for China in two summers will start. But what good are these reports without a little perspective? I'll give it a shot.
Let's start with the Cavaliers. They can offer LeBron James more money and more years than any other NBA team. In the summer of 2010 they're set up to be flush with cap space. The only way they wouldn't be is if they acquire an All-Star caliber player with a big contract before then, and that would be done with the intention of convincing James to stay.
That's where the Cavaliers stand. That's not changing much. So let's move on to LeBron James.
We know the following things about LeBron James: He wants to win championships. He wants to be one of the greatest players of all-time. He wants to be a global icon and have a commercial portfolio akin to those of Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. He wants to be the Warren Buffet of the NBA. How does that all factor in to his decision-making process in 2010?

LeBron: I'll play anywhere

by M.A. Mehta, Newhouse News Service Saturday August 09, 2008, 7:53 AM

Beijing -- Surrounded by a crush of tape recorders, cameras and boom mics, LeBron James said he was open to the possibility of playing overseas if he decides to opt out of his contract with the Cavaliers after the 2009-10 season.
James, one of the faces of the "Redeem Team" composed of NBA superstars looking to erase the U.S.'s recent failures on the international stage, denied an ESPN report that he had spoken to overseas teams about a deal that could land him $50 million a year, but he didn't dismiss the possibility of packing his bags if the right offer came along.
"You never know," James said at Team USA's media briefing Friday before the Americans play Olympic host China in their first game of pool play Sunday.

And this is one of the many reasons why I cant stand to watch pro sports. All about the money and not the dedication to a city and its fans, who pay there salarys.

There used to be a time when the greats like Jordan(early years), Johnson, Bird, ect, would not think about leaving for another team and wearing another jersey. And would simply reply to a question about playing somewhere else as "My dedication is to the Cleveland fans and the city no where else".

I don't see these big names going overseas. First off the NBA and the players association would get heavily involved, for the good of the leauge. Next the endorsement deals for these guys would be effected majorily. Sure, there are oversea markets for endorsement revenue... but, it would kill their American marketability as they may be viewed as "traitors". And with many of the major companies that are involved in the NBA are American companies...Nike, Gatorade, Shick...etc. So, I think it's all hypothetical talk that hasn't been thought out.
