Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

I don't expect anyone who isn't a suffering Cleveland sports fan to be able to understand. Besides, you really can't compare Marbury or Rick Nash to LeBron, neither of them compare to the icon status that LeBron has. Shit, Marbury isn't even liked in NY. How do you think the New York fans would react if Derek Jeter showed up to a Cavs vs. Knicks playoff game wearing a Cavs cap? There would be rioting in the streets and death threats at Jeter's home.

A) I am a suffering Cleveland sports fan. I like the Tribe, I just like the Yankees better. I don't care for NBA, so I'm not a Cavs fan. But, I like the Brownies... so...
B) I wasn't trying to make a like comparison so much as just illustrate. As a Yankee fan, and using Jeter as a perfect example, I reacted in the following way when I saw Jeter Jeter rooting for the skunkbears last year (and prior years).... "Huh. What a shame" and then I went back to watching the game and not giving a shit who's rooting for who... even on TV. At no time did it ever occur to me to go off on an internet rant, nor did it occur to me to call in to the YES network and complain about how Jeter shouldn't be on Steinbrenners club, since George is an Ohio State guy... And, I should note, when Jeter steps up to the plate... I want him to get a hit, score a run, and all that.... and the fact that he's a Michigan fan complete escapes my attention.
C) Your remarks about Jeter just establish that NY has idiot fans... Idiots who worry about this kind of bullshit like it matters.

Trust me, the next time LeBron hits a game winner no one in Cleveland is going to boo his ass or probably even remember he was wearing a Yankee hat. Nor should they. I mean, fuck... supposing I was a MLB baseball player, who ended up playing ball in Detroit, am I supposed to be a fucking Michigan fan all of a sudden? Of course not. And to hell with those who'd hold me hostage about showing up at events and supporting whoever the fuck I want to support.

You are arguing the "rationality" of this anger, but we are talking about sports fans here, Cleveland sports fans at that, so none of that applies...This is about marketing and understanding your customers. The most brand loyal people on the planet are sports fans. That is fact. It was a dumb move by LeBron plain and simple...Nothing beneficial was going to come from that. And if he did it with the same "to hell with them" attitude you have taken, or if it could be interpreted as such, then he is a complete moron and so are his managers/handlers. He is a public figure. While you have the luxury to say "to hell with them", he does not, without paying a price, even if that price is nothing more than some ire from Clevelanders. If he wants to be just a regular fan, it's a little late for that. He represents others now. That's why he gets the big money...Rationality does not exist in this arena...

LeBron James signs autographs for fans after practice in Shanghai, where the Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic play today.

SHANGHAI, China -- LeBron James looms large in Shanghai.
He hovers over a basket in billboards around the city leading to an NBA exhibition game today between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic and another game Saturday in Macau.
"For me, growing up, I never thought about having a billboard anywhere," James said yesterday, slipping off a white NBA headband and replacing it with a Cleveland Indians cap.

Shhhhh... but in 9 games, LeBron has started the season averaging 28 points, 7.6 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.6 blocks... I don't know how you measure the best start through 9 games ever, but this would be in the running. And on LeBron's line last night (39-13-14):

On Chamberlain's big night in 1968, he had 53 points, 32 rebounds and 14 assists. The 39-13-14 plateau has only been reached seven times, with Oscar Robertson doing it on five occasions.

LeBron Hurt As Pistons Blow Out Cavs

By The Associated Press
The last time LeBron James was in suburban Detroit, he turned in one of the best playoff performances in NBA history.
This time he couldn't make it out of the first half.
James sprained his left index finger in the second quarter Wednesday night, and did not return, and the Detroit Pistons went on to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-74 Wednesday night.

Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto comments on Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James' injury

Thursday, November 29, 2007
Auburn Hills, Mich.
-- This could be trouble, big trouble.
If you are a Cavaliers fan, you want to believe LeBron James has a "sprained" left index finger, as the team said after Wednesday's 109-74 loss to Detroit at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Maybe that's the case, but more tests are coming today.
But this is LeBron James, who has played more total minutes than anyone in the NBA in the past three years. He was second in the league heading into this game. This is LeBron James, who plays through most injuries.
This is LeBron James, who recently had a tooth pulled, and casually mentioned that he has had "several" cracked teeth in the last few years from being whacked in the face driving to the basket.
