Ohio State linebacker Homan likely will redshirt

Thursday, November 08, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Sophomore linebacker Ross Homan appears headed toward a medical redshirt, Ohio State linebackers coach Luke Fickell said Wednesday.
"[There's] a very good chance, a very good chance," Fickell said.
The Buckeyes have been waiting for Homan's return since he was forced to the sideline by a turf toe injury before the first Big Ten game of the season against Northwestern. Two weeks ago, coach Jim Tressel said it was too early to think about the prospects of Homan redshirting, but Fickell said he still hasn't returned to practice at this point.

You hate to say that a medical redshirt is good news, but at this point it is best to wait until next year. There is no need to rush him back early for a couple of special teams plays and lose an entire year of eligibility.

Get well Ross.

The redshirt rule
I wanted to correct something I had in today's paper on linebacker Ross Homan and the possibility that he might be a medical redshirt this season.

In print, I said it didn't appear he would be eligible, but I was working from an outdated NCAA rule. The rule has been revised so that a player can appear in up to 30 percent of a team's games (with all fractions rounded up) and still apply for the redshirt.

Homan has appeared in 4 games, so -- using either a 12-game or 13-game season, whatever you prefer, it doesn't matter -- he is not over the limit. Homan has a nagging turf toe and still is not practicing.

Now, he has two years of eligibility remaining even if he doesn't redshirt, so here's where it gets interesting. Homan can play in 2008 and 2009, and then decide: Does he want to leave, or apply for his medical redshirt and return for 2010?

So it's kind of a moot point for now. But it's not a bad thing for him to have that possibility to play three more years rather than two.

If Ross is healthy now, I wonder if he would opt to play in BCS title game, as opposed to taking medical redshirt year. ...as noted above he has 2 more years of eligibility anyway.

Although we could be back next year...you never know how many chances you will get.

JT was asked yesterday about the possibilty of Homan playing in the title game. He said it was very unlikey, unless there were several injuries at LB.

Homan hopes to get medical redshirt

NEW ORLEANS ? Ohio State's Ross Homan is allowed to hit people again ? just not the guys on the other team.

The sophomore linebacker played just four games this year before being sidelined with a foot injury. And while he's practicing at full speed again, he'll sit out the national title game in hopes of being granted another year of eligibility.

According to NCAA rules, an injured player can seek a medical redshirt year as long as he doesn't appear in more than 30 percent of his team's games. Homan is slightly over the limit and won't know for sure whether he qualifies until the Buckeyes formally apply after the season, but coach Jim Tressel said, "He'll be fine."

The Coldwater product was splitting time at weakside linebacker with Marcus Freeman before being injured against Washington. He appeared briefly against Northwestern the following week but hasn't played since then.

"It's been miserable (sitting out), especially with this kind of season ? playing in a national championship game," said Homan, who was able to recover without surgery. "But God's blessing me, and everything happens for a reason, so I'm all right with it."

A medical redshirt year would give Homan an extra season with his brother. Coldwater junior Adam Homan, one of the top fullbacks and linebackers in Ohio, made a verbal commitment to the Buckeyes last week.

"I really supported him on his decision," Ross said. "I wasn't trying to push him into anything, just let him make his own decision. He said, 'Ohio State's the best place for me.'

"He's got a good work ethic and is a humble kid. I think he'll do well here."

A line in the article above.

Incorrect, since the 30% is multiplied by the number of games in the season, and then rounded up. So 4=4.

You can't expect sports-journalists to know the rules as well as you do.

I swear, Bill (or is it BKB?), sometimes you act like it's their job or something.

Ross says his injury was a more serious than turf toe but he is completely healthy and is a better player mentally after the redshirt.

Glad to hear that he's totally healthy. Good luck this season Ross!!

Did he get the medical redshirt? If not, since he played in four games he used a year of eligibility and couldn't count 2007 as a "normal" redshirt, correct? I thought that you couldn't apply for a medical redshirt until you had completed all five years of normal eligibility.
