LB Ross Homan (official thread)

Didn't think it was a problem seeing others have asked for updates before, but it won't happen again.
And routinely they are met with the same answer. This isn't scout/rivals, we don't have to spread out content over a week, and threads/topics don't disappear to distant pages with vague titles. Everything is provided asap in an organized fashion.

Tressel said in the presser that Ross would probably miss this week and maybe a couple more after that.

The Attack Force Player of the Week was Marcus Freeman and Marcus has had the fortune of having more snaps. Unfortunately Ross Homan has been banged up and will probably miss this week as well and maybe a couple more.

I didn't see Ross play today....maybe the rumors of him being hurt (turf toe) might be correct.

Participated in four games this year. How would a medical redshirt be possible?

the student-athlete’s incapacitating injury or illness occurred during the first half of the
season and before competition in more then two contests or 20% of the season’s
scheduled contests (whichever is greater);

Ross has appeared in 4 games which is over the 3 limit (2.4 rounded up).

Thanks for clearing that up so nicely. Completely on board now.

Looks like the coaches are looking to play Ross later in the year. If he's played in 4 games, that should preclude a medical redshirt, as sandgk mentioned above.

Linebacker Ross Homan continues to be unavailable due to an undisclosed foot injury. Homan has appeared in just four games, but Heacock said there is no plan at the present to try and redshirt Homan this season.

"To be honest with you I don't think we as a staff have discussed that at all," said Heacock when asked if a redshirt season for Homan was something under consideration.

"I think as a staff we're planning on playing him. I think that's the plan right now.

"If he can get back next week, we've got to see if he's all right, but if he gets back next week and is ready to play I don't think we're going to save him a whole bunch. We're going to need him down the road.

"You go through the season without a bye week and guys start wearing down. Those linebackers wear down. They're all in the kicking game, and I felt last year we wore down a little bit as the season went on. I think it's important to get rotation going with that like we had before so I think we plan on playing him if he's healthy."

The rules have changed this year regarding applying for a medical hardship waiver. Up to four games are permitted now for a 12 game football schedule.

From the NCAA Division I bylaws manual:

"The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution?s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport."

12 games * 30% = 3.6 games ... which rounds to 4 games.

Even if Homan did participate in 4 games, he's eligible for a medical
hardship waiver (aka medical redshirt).

With that said I think if Homan can play this year he will play. Just to good not to play.

Thanks for pointing out the change to 30% - here's the manual section.

ncaa.division_i_manual/2007-08.pdf

14.2.4 Hardship Waiver.
A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference

or the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet for reasons of "hardship." Hardship is defined as an
incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 8/8/02)

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any twoyear
or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year
in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/01/01, 8/8/02)

(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with
the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition
not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first
scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in
the applicable sport or the number of completed contests or dates of competition) and results in incapacity
to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective
8/1/01, 4/3/02)

(c) The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates
of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the
institution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled or
completed competition (including exempted events but excluding scrimmages and exhibition contests identified
as such in the legislation) against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the
NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that
sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number
of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled
or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97
effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 3/10/04, 5/11/05, 8/4/05, 4/26/07 applicable to student-athletes who
initially enrolled full time in a collegiate institution on or after August 1, 2003)

ozone.personnel.update

OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel said yesterday that linebacker Ross Homan is beginning to make some progress in his recovery from a foot injury that has kept him out of action for much of the season.

"Ross Homan went a little bit this week," said Tressel indicating that Homan took part in at least some practice drills this week, but then added "I don't think he's ready (to play on Saturday)."

Homan did dress today and looked good in warmups. But word is he will not see the field this year unless 1 of the three starters go down at LB. Looks like we will have Homan for 3 more years thats a good thing for the Bucks!!!!!
