LB Mike Mitchell (transfer to Texas Tech, transfer to Southeastern FL)

I know next to nothing on an insider level....

That said, it seems odd to me that if playing time truly is his primary issue at tOSU, why would he be willing to go sit out another whole year when he just redshirted this past season? Starting right now, he could have 4 full seasons here, or 3 seasons somewhere else.

1. Given the issues with his father, a waiver allowing Mitchell to play right away would be a formality. The question is whether or not MM is comfortable playing this year, even at a school in the DFW area. Birmingham from 11W seems to think MM might take a semester away from everything.

2. I believe (under the circumstances) that withdrawing from school for the 2014 season freezes his 5-to play-4 year clock. MM would start 2015 with 4-to play-4. Figuring out the clock/scholarship issue for the future is why Mitchell will still be taking classes in Columbus until May.

If his father indeed has serious health issues, I completely understand this. And I really hope that is the reason he is leaving (not hoping his father is ill obviously, just hoping Mike didn't have a bad experience here). Family always comes first and I would do the same if my father was ill.

Notwithstanding, I am going to be extremely critical of the staff here. Mitchell was healthy the second half of the season and was starting to blow up in practice. At that point, we were undefeated and on the mission for a NCG appearance. We were a couple defensive playmakers away at the LB and DB position away from being a defense that could make that happen and it was clear that Grant, Pitt Brown, etc. were not getting it done (see Bell and Mitchell). Mitchell was ready to play, should have played, and the same as Bell, could have taken his freshmen lumps while getting experience at the position and improve as the season went along. Given all of the above, there was zero reason to redshirt Mitchell. If he plays to half of his abilities, he won't be here for 4 years anyways and we needed him today, if not yesterday. If Mike is leaving in any part due to how his situation was handled (even if part of the reason is to be with his father), he is completely justified. In any event, my confidence in the LB play improving next year is substantially reduced now. With Shazier gone and now Mitchell, we are going to have to bank of the 2014 class to step it up big or hope that by some miracle something clicks with Grant and/or Perry.

IMO......if Fick was solely the LB coach last year, MM might have played. If someone else was the DC calling all the plays and Fick could have focused solely on LB development then playing MM would have been a stronger possibility. As it was, it sure looked like it was crisis management as a committee and very little in the way of advocating for/developing talent. We knew we had lots of holes on D and we were trying our best to mask it. That's my take from the cheap seats. Regardless, the larger point is that I find it highly doubtful we would even be having this conversation if his dad was healthy. That's Mike's primary focus right now and I certainly respect that.

But if we assume the "real reason" he left was b/c of dissatisfaction w/being red shirted ... which is what has made this thread into the cluster[Herbstreit] of rumor-mongering that it's become ... would he get a waiver for an (allegedly) exaggerated illness? I don't think he would.
Mind I'm not saying in any way that his father's illness is a fraud... I'm just trying to approach it from the angle that a certain subset are asking us to. And it just doesn't add up, at least right now.

My impression, from the very first post about these allegations (and this isn't aimed at you) -- basically accusing him and his family of lying, is that some people may be better served following syndicated Soap Operas. They seem ever so desperate to make everything into one.

If his Dad has serious health issues now, Mike would not be staying through the semester.
Likely multiple issues?
PT
Vrable leaving, and other coaches not.
Maybe some health issue with his Dad.

When Mike signed last year, Ken called the chance at early playing time, “a high priority. ... The Mitchells don’t like to sit on the bench."

Oh yea, goodbye Mickey. Thad has got to be pissed!
