LB Mike D'Andrea (official thread)

How many of you truly believe D'Andrea would improve the MLB position?

I find it hard to believe that there are people out there who still do not give credit to Schlegel. That boy has done everything right. He marks out higher than D'Andrea in practices for the last 2 years. He was the slated starter this year regardless of whether D'Andrea was hurt or not, and Snyder was a homer on D'Andrea because he recruited D'Andrea. I am not ripping on D'Andrea either, just those who truly believe D'Andrea is better than Schlegel. Nobody has seen D'Andrea play much at all, yet to some he is the second coming of Dick Butkis. Give Mr. Schlegel his props. He is very deserving.

D'Andrea looks like a career back-up. Next year, the job should be Laurinaitis's. D'Andrea doesn't have the mentality of an MLB (doesn't shed blocks well; doesn't like to get hit first; doesn't seem to react well, especially to plays that come right to him), and he is (for whatever reason) "injury prone". On the other hand, Schlegel is a classic MLB, albeit without as much athleticism as D'Andrea; and Laurinaitis looks to be the same; Chad Hoobler will be in the mix as well, although with the lack of depth at TE, he may need to move back there next year.

maybe MDA shifts out to the will spot where he has more room to operate. that would be entirely contingent on hoobler being strong enough at the mike position. my opinion on the matter is the following: MDA, Hoobler, and Freeman are probably the 3 best lb's coming back next year (at this point that is the case, but we'll see what an offseason brings). if those 3 do prove to be the 3 best, would it not be wise to try and get them all on the field at the same time?

Picking on the LB play this year is the last thing on my mind...but I will cast my lot in with saying that D'Andrea would slightly improve the MLB. He was a playmaker in the NC State game, and I think he would have wrapped up Vince a couple of times (in particular that long pass completion to Pittman that was a result of Shlegel slipping right off of VY). I ain't gonna knock Shlegel, though.

I like having the option to set Carp as a rush TE with DA in there. Or it might be the opposite. DA has always been known to be quick with his first step. Maybe they drop him on the end? It give us a ton of options and will create issues for opposing O coordinators.

Edit for smelling

D'andrea has been discribed by other players as a stiff. Herbstreit said on the radio one time that the coaches were looking at putting him in a three technique. I have always thought it would be cool if we went to a 3-4 when he is healthy and let him do the Vrable thing. But why mess with the best defense in the country. He will be a good one next year but I have not seen any evidence that he is better than 51.

Per the Ozone.....

Tressel indicated that neither D'Andrea nor Freeman would be available for the Penn State game, but that both are expected to return to action this season.

"He (D'Andrea) hasn't had any hitting, so my guess would be that he would be hard pressed to travel to Penn State, but he has shown a lot of progress this week From what I've seen, if the game were this Saturday, he wouldn't, but the game isn't, so we'll see," said Tressel of D'Andrea.

It was much the same outlook for Freeman.

I think this season but not this game," said Tressel.

"I don't think there's any way he could play against Penn State or even the next game. I think he could get the rest."

Uh, that same D'Andrea beat out Schlegel for the starting MLB job last year, and was playing very well until he got hurt. He had made marked improvement reading and reacting to plays and getting to the ball carrier. And I have no idea where you got the "doesn't like to get hit" part...I saw him dive into plays quite a few times. The big thing is that he is indeed injury-prone. If he could just stay healthy for a whole season, he could at least approach the hype heaped on him when he first committed to us.
