LB Marcus Freeman (HC Notre Dame, Constant Backtracker)

According to NFLDraftscout.com (via PD article)

Marcus "could go as high as 3rd Round" if he decided to forgo his senior year of eligibility and enter NFL draft.

and speculates that 5 junior buckeyes could go in the first round (JL, Jenkins, Vern, Robo, and Boone) if they all choose to go that route.

I think that JL, Jenkins, and robo are ready

Vern is still a question mark for the first round. i see him as a second round pick for a team that is trying to run a 3-4 and they will convert him to outside linebacker. Not many teams, other than the Bengals, will pick a guy in the first round and then try to change his position. (ie David Pollack DE to LB or Peter Warrick Wide Out to Slot)

Boone has the "measurables" but I think he could use another year in college.

Freeman should definitely stick around.

Your basing this purely on their ability to maximize their draft position. without considering other intangibles, like family situations.

If we win the National championship this year, a larger number will likely leave, if we don't, i think there would be a greater likelyhood of guys coming back (given we'll be stacked in '08) to take a shot next year.

Regarding Marcus, I know he has a child, and family in Korea that he has never met, and would like to send the whole family overseas for an extended trip (recent PD article). Seems like he has a greater incentive to start making money sooner than later....So while I agree, he could unquestionably improve his draft position by returning...who knows what he'll ultimately decide.

I agree 100% with what you are saying. I understand the family aspect and needing the money. He is also a 4th year junior so that plays into it as well. It is tough to stick around college for 5 years when the NFL is calling your name.

Keep in mind that NFL money isn't guarenteed. The difference between 3rd round signing bonus and 1st round is astronomical. Look at David Pollack, there is a good chance that he will be living off of his signing bonus for the rest of his life if he can't get back on the football field.

I think we'll see Freeman back next year. JL is ready but I think he may stay...just a hunch. Jenkins is gone, Vern is likely (he will be a combine freak that the scouts will love), and I see one of Boone or Robo leaving. I highly doubt Freeman leaves early unless he is on course to graduate this year. Even then, I see him staying. He is very close to his family but from what I've heard, they place a huge emphasis on education.

Some comments from Marcus regarding the NFL Draft evaluation.

Thirteen Buckeye Juniors File for NFL Evaluation
...

Request for evaluation does not necessarily mean that a player is considering the draft, though in some cases it is a strong possibility. Gholston is probably a prime candidate for an early out, but some of the other likely candidates such as Laurinaitis, Jenkins and Freeman are saying their current plans are to stay at OSU.

"I guess it's a reality check," said Freeman. "The next level is coming soon for a lot of us, whether it's this year or next year, we have to make sure we're ready.

"The big thing was getting it back before the break so you can go back and talk to your family about that decision.

"When you look at those draft papers, each year the amount of people that put them in has gone up.

"We're excited to see what the grades say. "It's always good to get feedback, so I'm very curious about what they're going to say. But I plan fully to be back here," Freeman said.

It's worth noting that Marcus just graduated with a degree in sports and leisure studies.

Given that Marcus received his degree on Dec. 9, I would be surprised if he returned next year. Hope I'm wrong, because I agree with the sentiment that he is pretty underrated.

...not sure if the fact that his course of study was sports & leisure studies is any indication of his affinity for school. (no disrespect intended for sports & leisure majors)

This year Marcus has begun to live up to his billing as a super prospect. He was slowed by injuries and had to pick up the speed of the game and schemes. He has really blossomed this year and and I think another year (specially if #33 leaves early) would see him surging up the draft boards. However since he has his degree now and I believe a family (meaning a child) I would not blame him at all if he left early and started earning a paycheck, even though in total dollars he might be better of coming back and improving his stock.

Just in case you do decide to leave early Marcus, help to bring home the crystal so you'll have no regrets

Big C Q'ing it up with OSU LB Marcus Freeman

By Carlos "Big C" Holmes
Staff Writer

Sunday, December 23, 2007

Big C chats it up with Wayne H.S. grad and OSU STUD outside LB Marcus Freeman in a sultry Q&A session about the upcoming National Championship game.

Q: What must the Buckeyes do to win the National Championship this year?
A: The biggest thing is we have to be at the top of our game. I fully think last year we were prepared, but on game day we didn't go out there and play the best we could. I felt this year we have been training extremely hard and we have to make sure that on January 7th when we go out there to do the best we can.
