Ohio State spotlight: DE John Simon
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Friday November 4, 2011
Kyle Robertson | Dispatch
Garrett Goebel is usually busy on Saturdays, playing nose guard for Ohio State. He doesn?t get to see a lot of other games, so asking him whether his teammate John Simon ranks among the elite defensive linemen in college football isn?t quite fair.
?I really haven?t watched a lot of other guys, but he is definitely special,? Goebel said.
Simon?s zeal for the game ? from the four-point stance reminiscent of former Buckeye All-American Jim Stillwagon, to his relentless play that conjures memories of Will Smith?s dogged pursuits ? has made him a must-watch player on almost every snap. It also has made him an inspiration for his teammates, who otherwise consider themselves to be hard workers in their own right.
?It makes you want to go just as hard as he does, if not harder,? Goebel said.
That should be evident again today as the OSU defensive linemen, coming off a game against Wisconsin in which they had to fight through the biggest offensive line in college football, go up against Indiana, which has one of the smaller lines in the game.
Simon, the team leader in tackles for loss (9.5) and sacks (five), isn?t expected to approach today?s early-afternoon game any differently than he did in prime time against the Badgers. Now being used primarily as a defensive end who might rush inside one play, from outside the next, or drop into zone coverage, his motor is always red-lining.
And the odd thing is, ?I?ve never noticed him really tired,? Goebel said.
That?s one of the reasons the rest of the line, including Johnathan Hankins, Adam Bellamy and ? more and more ? freshman Michael Bennett feed off of his energy.
?He?s definitely a great leader,? Goebel said. ?He?s not going to talk about how good he is or anything like that. He just goes out there every day and practices as hard as he can, and gives great effort.?
