The game of his life
John Simon has always loved football, from playing imaginary games as a kid to working hard in the defensive trenches for Ohio State
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Friday October 14, 2011
John Simon wonders what the neighbors must have thought.
Every Sunday, little Johnny Simon could be seen through their windows taking chalk and lining a makeshift football field on Sandalwood Court near Youngstown and then playing an imaginary game all by himself.
Attempting to play football alone isn?t most kids? idea of fun, but for Simon it was a blast. He?d be the quarterback ? which he really was back then ? and throw a pass. He?d then become a wide receiver and try to catch his own throw. He?d elude imaginary tacklers and tumble to the concrete, skinned knees be damned.
Part of the game was eluding cars. Despite its name, his house was not on a cul-de-sac.
?I don?t know what someone would think looking out their window seeing me out in the street running around,? Simon said. ?They probably thought I was a little crazy.?

By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Junior defensive lineman John Simon was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Monday following Ohio State’s 17-7 win over previously unbeaten Illinois.
The Buckeyes snapped a two-game losing streak in Champaign to pick up their first conference win of the season at the expense of Ron Zook and his Fighting Illini.
Simon collected a career-high eight tackles and four tackles for loss in the victory. He also recorded both of the team’s sacks on Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase as the Buckeye defense blanked the Illini for the first 53 minutes of Saturday’s game at wind-swept Memorial Stadium.
