LB Freddie Lenix (Cincinnati signee; transfer to Notre Dame College)

Thanks Alan, that's kinda the vibe that I got from his quotes I've heard from him and his obvious allegiance to this program. Bottom line is that we have two special talents here, possibly better than Jr. or Donte. We'll have to wait and see. The thing that I love about these Glenville kids is their desire to be here. I'm alot more weary of a kid that we have to "win over" than a kid who's just waiting for that offer. I think that being sucessful at anything you do is never having to second-guess your desire to be there in the first place, whether it's in business, athletics, or whatever. These guys all know they've made the decisions that are best for them, and THAT takes all the possible second-guessing crap out of the picture.

It's too bad about Darius Hiley, it would have been great to see all 5 of these guys back together again. But, 4 out of 5 ain't bad! Peace.

Just something I'd like to point out now that Freddie is officially a Buck...

Lenix, Fuqua, and Jamario O'Neal ran with Ginn on the 4x200 relay that ran a 1:23.78 - the best high school time in the nation this season.

(from the adidas nationals last year)

Yep, 3/4 of the fastest 4x200 team in the country will be roaming the field in scarlet and gray next year.

Dubs,
Long time, how've ya been?

I'm on record saying Teddy G is the starting corner next year. EJ might not be around, and Ginn would probably beat him out anyways. O'Neal is a freak of nature as you said, no way he doesn't see time in the D-backfield next year. Lenix is a ball hawk with great speed. Stud on special teams next year at worse, like Sirjo this year. Gotta think he'll be playing at least nickel or backing up at safety by his soph. year.

Been good "CH", hope the holidays were good to you.

I'll take your word on Jr. at CB next year, I wanna lean that way but the kid is just so damn good on offense. I'll be the first to say that CB is the toughest position to play in ANY sport. PERIOD! A true shut-down corner is a notch above a stud left handed pitcher. They are just so hard to find.

I make it a point to watch Mentor play Glenville every year, and was pretty shocked at what I saw two years ago when Thom Abbott absolutely lit up that defensive backfield that included Ginn, Whitner, and Hiley. I wanna say he put up about 400 yards on them in addition to near 50 points. I'll do it in a "little" post like this one and not a "headliner" that Ginn Sr. is a better man than he is a "coach." That kinda talent should have never been humiliated like that.

Anyway, put into a more structured defense like we play here, these kids are going to shine above expectations. The crazy thing is, that from a pure football perspective, Lenix may be the most talented of all of them, at least from what I've seen. I also see him as "growing" into a LB here. Lenix does have that ability to put himself in the vicinity of the football on every play. We like to call them "ball hawks." The greatest "ball-hawk" I ever saw play here was Randy Gradishar. Lenix could be that good.

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
OSU-Glenville pipeline yields speedy Lenix
Monday, January 10, 2005
Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Ohio State tapped into its Cleveland Glenville High School connection yesterday when Freddie Lenix became the 14 th member of the Buckeyes’ 2005 football recruiting class.

Lenix, an all-around performer who excels at linebacker, will join former Cleveland Glenville teammates Ted Ginn Jr., Troy Smith, Curtis Terry and Donte Whitner next season. Going to Ohio State with Lenix will be Jamario O’Neal, who teamed with Lenix to lead the Tarblooders to a Division I state semifinal last season.

The chance to stay close to home ultimately swayed Lenix to pick OSU over Wisconsin, Michigan State and others.

"I have a 1-year-old son (Freddie Jr.) and I wasn’t going to go too far from him and make it hard for me to see him," Lenix said.

He followed the philosophy of his high-school coach, Ted Ginn Sr., that all things being equal, it’s almost always better in the long run to play for the home-state team. Lenix made his official visit during the weekend and opted to commit "because I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity."

He scored a 15 on the ACT but said he expects to be eligible based on his 3.4 gradepoint average. Lenix said he will take the ACT again in an attempt to better his score.

In the meantime, OSU coaches face a multiple-choice question as to where he might best fit in their scheme. With reputed 4.23-second speed in the 40-yard dash, he has run on some of Glenville’s formidable track relay teams the past two years.

So he has great speed, but at 5 feet 11, 200 pounds, he said he might have to put on weight to play outside linebacker in college. He proved to be a playmaker for Glenville, leading the team with 143 tackles and returning two interceptions for touchdowns last season.

That all-around ability is why OSU coaches might consider him at running back or safety, too.

"In my heart? I’m a linebacker," Lenix said. "But if I can’t put on the weight, I’ll play wherever they give me the chance."

Gotta love that attitude. A linebacker's heart at any position is fine by me! Welcome aboard Freddie!
