LB Etienne Sabino (official thread)

Sabino, Klein, Sweat or Storm. Take your pick. It doesn't matter for next season who is in there. All of them can play. Ohio State is always loaded
with great linebackers year after year.

Don't forget Bell or Whiting who both redshirted this season. Our second-string, and portions of our third-string, LB corps would start at 80-85% of other colleges.

Yeah, we have a rather disgusting amount of young and experienced talent for LB. We'd have to lose (god forbid) 2 or 3 guys before I would start to worry about depth.

Returning starters Brian Rolle and Ross Homan supplied Ohio State with two givens at linebacker when spring drills began this month. But it's the little-known third fellow, Etienne Sabino, who is providing the intrigue.

Sabino seems to be making his presence felt more each day because he's now reacting more than thinking. That's a good thing, according to co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell. It means Sabino is swinging into the fray with more frequency from the strongside position.

Whether it translates into a starting job in the fall remains to be seen, because there is plenty of competition for that third spot vacated by Austin Spitler. But Sabino, a 19-year-old who will be a junior in the fall, appears to be embracing the idea that his time has come.

"We had that discussion, and we had it last year going into the season," Fickell said. "I don't want to reiterate that he's only 19, that he should be a year behind, but it's time.

"That's the biggest thing. I don't care if you're 19."

Etienne Sabino is looking much more comfortable this spring. Just ask linebackers coach Luke Fickell. He has always had the athleticism to play linebacker at Ohio State, but it seems like he is finally starting to understand the defensive scheme, which has lead to him reacting now instead of hesitating. Although he is a junior this year, it?s almost unfair to say ?finally? considering he still only 19 years old. He had a good whack on tailback Boom Herron Friday and seems to fly around out there now that he knows where he is going. There?s a long way to go before the start of the season, but Sabino is definitely out in front to replace Austin Spitler as the third starting linebacker.

VIDEO: Ohio State linebacker Sabino striving for total perfection

COLUMBUS — If Etienne Sabino ever achieves the level he wants to achieve, look out.

A junior linebacker at Ohio State, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound product from North Miami Beach, Fla., doesn’t just want to be good.

He wants his performance to be spotless, and he won’t stop working until he reaches that plateau.

“I know he’s a guy who has work ethic, but he wants to be perfect,” said fellow linebacker Brian Rolle. “I tell him every day, ‘Man, we can’t be perfect. We’ve just got to do what’s in ourselves and do our best.’”

More Instinctive, ?Bino Having His Best Spring
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? Just play the game.

It sounds so simple, and yet for Etienne Sabino it was a constant struggle over his first two seasons at Ohio State.

"He's a cerebral guy that wants to know everything and in this sport you can't know everything," OSU linebackers coach Luke Fickell said.

"You've got to fly and attack and react on the run."

In other words, don't be so robotic, something Fickell stresses to his players at an early age.

"Coach Fickell always tells us, ?Don't be a robot'. If I tell you an ?A' gap player, don't stand in your ?A' gap and say ?I've got ?A' gap covered,'" linebacker Brian Rolle said.

"If he sees something, he's going to get it. And that's something that takes a very special player on this defense to do that, to play instinctive and go after things when you see it."

Etienne Sabino has the inside track for Ohio State's third starting linebacker spot alongside Ross Homan and Brian Rolle. "He's the guy," co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Luke Fickell said after Friday's practice. "I know he's going to be a junior, but he's still only 19 years old. You'd like to have more time with him, but he's coming along. This has been his best spring so far." There was a lot of buzz about Sabino last summer, but Ohio State went with experience (Austin Spitler) when the season rolled around. It sounds like Sabino is ready to take the next step in 2010.

Having a big, fast, athletic guy like Bino at the SAM is just what the doctor ordered. It will be interesting to see if he can cover those XL Big Ten tight ends.

It won't get shown as often on highlights, certainly not as often as the sacks he'll make; but it might be the most valuable role he plays in a very big game up in Madison.

Sophmores in college are 19 going on 20, so he will probably be 20 very soon. I have been waiting for this for about 3 years now, its Binos time to shine. Hopefully we get to see bino lay alot of people out just like what he did to Darryl Stonum.
