LB Etienne Sabino (official thread)

What do you all think about his possibly taking over Thad's role?

I was thinking that would be Nate Williams, since he has experience as a LB and played a lot of DE for us.

It's not a bad idea, but I think Sabino is more suited for a basic SLB position, but I am by no means an expert.

What are his measurables looking like these days? Wasn't one of the things that has hindered Sabino to this point the fact that in high school he was just permitted to run all over the place--assignments be damned--and make plays because he was such a freak athlete? If so, it may be asking an awful lot to expect him to now pick up another position at this stage.

He's listed at 6'3", 232 (an inch taller and 8 pounds lighter than Thad). I think his "freakish" athleticism would be more suited to Thad's role (LB/DE combo) than strictly a single LB position. With his frame, he could easily hold 245-250 and still keep his athleticism. He could be the most suitable replacement for Thad...

If he can't step into the starting spot that Spitler vacates, but I think he will end up starting at LB this year after the spring. Better chance there than besting Nathan Williams for Thad's vacated spot.

Bottom line: the staff will put their best 11 players on the field. If Sabino is one of our best 11 defenders (and I think he will be come spring), they will find a way to get him on the field, whether at LB, LEO, or DE.

Sabino is SO much fun to watch because he makes things happen when he's out there. Spring ball can't get here soon enough.

I would be shocked if we didn't see Bino at LEO a few times a game next year.

The more I think about this the more it makes sense. We're going to want to get Sabino on the field somehow next year, but I suspect we're also going to want to get Sweat, Bell, Klein et al out there as much as possible next season, too. Playing Sabino at the LEO and some at DE would help get more of them on the field at once.

I view Sweat and Williams as more instinctive players. I believe Sabino has all the athleticism in the world, but in the end Sweat and Williams are my two choices for the next breakout players, whether its LEO or LB.

I think Sabino replaces Spitler at LB. On obvious passing downs, Solomon Thomas comes in at end, Heyward slides down to DT like he did a majority of this year.

Our base front 4, IMO, will look like this on 1st and 2nd downs:

Williams
Larimore
Simon
Heyward

On 3rd down:
Williams
Simon
Heyward
Thomas

Keith Wells has a chance to get some action as well, but Thomas was just a beast last spring getting to the QB. It's tough to get on the field when your D-Line is as dominate as it was last year.

I think Sabino takes Spitler's vacated spot though.
