Freshman Devan Bogard said that every time he suits up for practice, he thinks about his late brother, Ramone Ashby.

Ohio State freshman safety Devan Bogard had a rough summer. His older brother died of bone-marrow cancer on June 27, and the Cleveland Glenville grad took it hard.

Ramone Ashby?s death came on his younger brother?s 18th birthday. He was 22 years old.

?I knew one day I was going to lose him,? Bogard said. ?He had cancer for six years. But it still wasn?t easy. We were very close.?

Ashby taught his younger brother how to play football, even though he wasn?t much of an athlete. He cheered and encouraged him, helped and supported him, pushed and prodded him, and now he was gone.

But this is where a sad story starts to stray from the script. A distraught Bogard didn?t lose focus after his brother?s death, but seems to have gained it. He didn?t slack off during workouts, but worked even harder. As painful as it was for Bogard, his brother?s death helped to drive him. Ashby was there for his younger brother in life, and now he?s there for him in death.

It has transformed a heart-wrenching tale into an inspiring one.

?(His death) motivated me,? Bogard said. ?It lifted me ? a lot. He?s my motivation every day. Every time I wake up, I?m about to go to practice and I put on my shoulder pads and helmet, I think about my brother. I?ve got to do it for him.?

"I think about my brother all of the time and its hard but now I've got you guys. I love you guys. Even Carlos, he ran me over today, but its cool. I'll get him tomorrow." - Devan Bogard

His story at his stripe removal.

Just hearing this little bit makes me appreciate Devan that much more. It's not easy showing up as a freshman and showing your raw feelings and character. Here's to him filling a starting safety role once Bryant or Barnett leave. I'm not sure if he's more FS or SS, but his potential is through the roof in my book. Good kid.

This stinks, Murray's done for the year, reeves' ankle sprain will likely keep him out awhile, and now bogard? Even looking beyond the fact that they're stalwarts on kick coverage, this trio is losing scout team reps at defensive back. What are the odds that all three freshmen DBs miss a month plus of time? I hope for the best with devan, but a brace doesn't sound good.
