LB Coach James Laurinaitis (2x B1G DPOY, 2006 Nagurski, 2007 Butkus, 2008 Lott, 3x All-American, OSU HOF)

Yes that's why they made him a Grad Assistant instead of analyst. They just have a time limit on that which the new rules was supposed to get around you could hire full time on field assisants though I still think they weren't allowed to recruit off campus like the 10 countable
Thankfully he can still recruit on campus and over phone and social media

Laurinaitis was listed as a Graduate Assistant and Assistant Linebackers coach at Notre Dame. He was very active, both at practice and in-game, as it pertains to coaching up the group, putting his fingerprint on the unit and making it his own.
There’s no better way to answer this other than saying this is a significant loss for Notre Dame in all facets. He was well liked by everyone at Notre Dame, well respected, and he did a great job with the linebackers. He lifted everyone up and brought great energy.

I've heard Orlando Pace might be available.

Obviously I think it's a slippery slope, if a team were to simply hire former standouts to coach, there's a chance of disaster. At a place like OSU you need to get the best, not simply a flashy or nostalgiac hire.

That being said, JL and Jenks were not only incredibly gifted physically, but played a cerebral brand of football. They both had incredibly successful professional careers, which would go a long way in the recruiting and coaching departments (thats the hope at least). Also think its important to note that both of these guys passed up 1st round money to come back for their senior years. These guys are Buckeyes through and through and if they're good teachers, this also would help with the restoration of the urgency involved in the rivalry (again, that's the hope).

I think it could be easy to go overboard with hires like this but as far as former players go, I think Jenks and JL would be as good of candidates as any. Thrilled to have the animal back home.

100%. Obviously not suggesting hire them directly to full-time position coaching roles. I'm saying they're ideal candidates to bring in at the GA level where they can gain experience and Day can evaluate them up close

Schlegs
Vrabel
Hartline
Fickel.

Those have been the 4 biggest alumni turned coaches for tOSU and beyond the last 20 years of so.

All four have found a pretty great measure of success during their time as coaches for the Bucks. So right now we're batting about.1000 in former players coming back and making great additions to their respective staffs. I see no reason why continued success can't be found with other former players who are looking to hit the ground running on coaching careers, then the university essentially taking ' pick of the litter' with coaching succession. (Be it HC or position coaches) If anything, all the 'hits' from these most recent hires should be more than enough encouragement to do just that.

Plus, it just means a little something more when your players come back home to make their impact. We always talk about Ohio kids having special powers and how special it is here for the game of football. You'd have to believe all that magic translates to the coaching ranks as well.
