LB Coach James Laurinaitis (2x B1G DPOY, 2006 Nagurski, 2007 Butkus, 2008 Lott, 3x All-American, OSU HOF)

The fundamental problem with this, and it looks like JL may be an exception, is that most star players just don't make good coaches. I think Day knows that, so I don't see him leading us too far astray. Hartline was an incredibly successful over-achiever and is the first to say so. His blend of ability with the necessity of football intelligence to optimize it may be the perfect coaching combination. I don't think it'd be accurate to characterize Laurinaitis as an overachiever, but he understood that he had to put in the work to understand the game. If JL can be half as successful as Hart, we are in fantastic shape.

Yep, and a GA spot costs us absolutely nothing if they don't work out. Let them leave and cut their teeth elsewhere if they aren't at that Hartline superstar level

It would be cool if he learns from Hartline and gets it right. These guys can breathe Ohio State in ways others cannot do so easily.
It's safe to say that JL will definitely let the defense know how important The Game is in November...

This is always my worry with former players. Fans want the nostalgia of that former player coaching their former team. But the reality is, most make average to terrible coaches. They don't understand that most players don't have their god given talent or their drive to be great. I was just listening to the Knuckleheads podcast where either JJ Reddick or Grant Hill said that's a reason why they'd never coach. It's frustrating when a player isn't willing to sacrifice in the same ways they did to become great. I like Hartline's path to coaching, and it seems like JL is taking a similar path. Not sure how many former football alum are realistic options. Just hoping Day can get the best coaching minds and get a nice mix of youth and experience.

I tried, very briefly, and I was a terrible rugby coach. Wadc45, on the other hand, is a phenomenal rugby coach. Not drawing any conclusions as to our respective playing ability, just putting it out there, Wes. :)

You don't hire a coach simply because they were a great player at your school, but it is a definite plus if they are qualified. I was pumped to have Hartline back and that worked out. We mention Hartline because of recent memory, but the clearest example to me is bringing Vrabel back to coach LB's and that went pretty well. Others may not work out the same and if not, then they fall in line with other failed assistants that we have had that never played at Ohio State (especially the defensive side of the ball lately).

This move makes sense in every way for me at this point in time. It's not like we made JL head coach and he knows the position so damned well, so couple the experience before getting here and his intellect playing the game (plus it sounds like he is a potential recruiting ace and locker room guy), I am thrilled for this hire and can't wait to see what he does with Tommy, Steele and the rest of the gang . You never know how it will actually pan out, but I think there are a whole lot of other schools outside OSU that would want him on their staff outside of him playing at OSU.

Eich’s got to be so pumped for this season. Imagine giving some thought into entering the draft (he had to at least consider the possibility) and coming back to find out Animal will be coaching you. Assuming, of course, that he wasn’t given the heads up in advance and that contributed to his decision to come back.

I was thinking the same thing...seems like a match made in heaven. I don't know that Eich stood much to gain by coming back in terms of draft stock, but if he knew JL was coming to coach maybe that played a part or he just wants another shot at a title (the mentality still exists among like 5% of college players I believe). Regardless, I am pretty excited to see JL and Tommy on the same sideline.

i know columbus is home, but did something happen at ND?

I was wondering how much his family had to do with his decision to return to Columbus

At a press conference today: Laurinaitis said his wife and daughters had “pure giddiness” when he told them they could return to Columbus. He wanted to make sure he would have the opportunity to work directly with the linebackers, but once he got that assurance, he couldn’t pass up the chance to return to his alma mater. “There’s only one place that’s home.”

Just sayin': Maybe a lot......
