LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

Pace went to the NFL.

Hawk isn't near good enough to get the Heisman. He's a GREAT GREAT defensive player...but I don't think he's the best player in College Football. That would have to be Vince Young right now...but people are so far up USC's ass that they seem to look past Young to either Leinart or Bush.

VY is one of the best running QBs in a while, and this season has suddenly turned into an accurate passer (his "worst" game vs. OSU was way better than any of Leinart's last three). Yet that is only enough to get him on the afterthought list. Apparently Leinart has to throw 5 picks and no TDs to be surpassed.
doesn't... return punts.
He helps block for them tho  He sure does a good job on the blocked-FG-return team.

Walk up to any football fan today and ask them, in 1996 who got more Heisman votes, Peyton Manning or the RB at Texas Tech?

IIRC, John Hicks came in second in the Heisman as an OL back in the 70's.

I don't think they all went to NY back in the 1940's, but Blanchard and Davis, "Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside", also finished top-5 three times. Davis's first and a pair of seconds is the closest rival to Archie, pending on where Leinart finishes this year.

I wouldn't say 'almost'. The 2nd place finisher (Hicks) still only had half as many votes as the winner (Cappelletti) -- that's a landslide.

What is amazing about Archie's accomplishment is that it was unanimous in '74 (1st place in all 5 regions) and though he finished 2nd to Muncie is the Far West region in '75, the final margin was even greater than what it was in '74. Leinart's margin last year was pretty slight, and I expect VY to win a majority of the southern region this year in addition to Bush taking a good number of votes away from Leinart.

Archie didn't just win the Heisman 2 years in a row, he absolutely obliterated the competiton in the final voting both years.
