Watched "Grave Encounters" tonight. It is a low-budget Indie horror flick. The story has elements that are overused, mainly the found footage from an insane asylum, but fuck it, I thought it was really a good time for what it was. Acting was good, effects weren't overdone, and you could see influences (and even shout outs) to everything from Paranormal Activity to Blair Witch to Session 9 to House of 1000 Corpses. All in all, highly recommended. I give it 4/5, not because it is a tremendous movie like a bigger budget flick would be, but because I was entertained and for what they had to work with they did a fine job. Part 2 is coming out in October, I'll see if I can find it somewhere.

Holy S. You think you know someone.

I just found out my wife, married nearly 21 years, dating/married for about 24 years, has never seen:

Apocalypse Now
2001: A Space Odyssey
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

How is this possible?

I have got to get Netflix or something. She has to see these movies.

FYI, only Apocalypse Now is available on Netflix out of those three

The Thing (2011) - Pale imitation of the 1982 version.

Carpenter's Thing is one of my favorite movies of all time and I was actually pleasantly surprised by the new film.

Go back and watch the original (no not the '51 film) and pay particular attention to the scene where they go and inspect the destroyed Norwegian base.

"Antibodies". This is a fine German crime thriller somewhat in the vein of Silence of the Lambs (they even allude to Hannibal Lector at one point, in a humorous type of way in an otherwise nonhumorous situation). Excellent acting, plenty of buildup, and for Norman Reedus fans (like me), you get a minor appearance at the beginning of the film. 4/5 from me, well worth the watch. Subtitled, so keep that in mind.

I'll have to do that. It's probably been 3-4 years since I've seen Carpenter's. Maybe I'll give the 2011 version another go in tandem with the old one and see what I think.

V/H/S

Have to say, I didn't mind the concept, and all the girls more or less took their shirts off and all that, which was great and all, but...I didn't get the big reviews of this movie. I didn't think it was all that good, I didn't think it was all that well made, and the camera work at times was atrocious, which I know was part of the point (VHS tapes and all), but it was done at annoying times and it was overkill. Add in that almost none of the stories were shrouded in any kind of reality, or even suspended reality, at all, and I just didn't think it delivered. I was really disappointed in Ti West because I liked House of the Devil. I like these found footage type of concepts, so I'll go 2.5/5, but if I didn't like the concept I would have hated it.

Recently picked up Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu.......watched The Phantom Menace last night. Not as awful as I thought it was the first time I saw it. The CGI addition of Yoda over that turrible puppet they used the first go around was a HUGE save.
