Lamarcus Joyner (DB New York Jets)

He wasn't that close at all. Family friend, not blood related, not a factor in LJ's decision. I don't care if you believe me or not. Ask Bill Greene, who knows Genron personally, how much he "mattered" in terms of LJ's recruitment.

If you knew some of the stuff he said about Tressel and the OSU program off the record, you wouldn't care for him, either.

Good luck to LJ at FSU! Always hard to pull a kid away from his childhood favorite...
Whether you like the guy or not is irrellevant to the fact that he was close the the situation...far closer than others.

Most schools struggle with their hit rate on top recruits. OSU doesn't land as many kids at the 11th hour, but they also have a lot less transfers out when those promises or hype fails to pan out. These things have a tendency of working themselves out.

If LJ was going to play a future opponent, particularly an annual one, this would be a huge blow. Instead, it's just a void that they can fill with someone else, this year or next.

The huge losses are your signees that burn a hole on your bench or those that make plays against you.

I agree with your thoughts the only thing I would like to add is we are consistently in the lead of prize prospect in December and January before we fall off. Then the negative recruiting takes over and we lose these kids, and we usually don't have a good come back for the negative recruiting.
Absolutely. I've always been antsy about Henderson, Joyner, James and Hankins. I just don't feel that one win or loss leads to the others.

I think this is a better-worded version of what BuckNut65 was trying to get across, instead of the cynical doomsday recruiting scenario. I agree with the former.

I agree, the weakness of our staff though is closing out recruiting classes strong. Especially with OOS kids that's all, we'll still be an annual winner, just we have a weakness in this area.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the Buckeye staff doesn't "close" well because they don't want kids who need "closing". In other words, they want kids who are completely sold on Ohio State, and not just looking for the "best offer" or "most love" in the weeks leading up to Signing Day. I'm sure that the staff makes some exceptions, but I really believe that JT would rather have a recruit walk away because he wasn't "100% sold", than to be stuck with an unhappy camper who didn't realize that "recruiting love" ends the minute you sign your LOI.

Being in the LEAD for a recruit is only a little bit better than not being on the radar. Recruiting is heartbreaking if you feel every lean or Leading is a sure thing. We get whom we get ...Say Good Luck to Lamarcus and it s an opprtunity for another young man.

I think your post, combined with Josh's, "also have a lot less transfers out when those promises or hype fails to pan out. These things have a tendency of working themselves out," from a few posts earlier sums up a lot of our recruiting situation. A kid can be a 12 star and recruited by every BCS school in the country and still not be the right fit for tOSU. We just have to trust we get the majority of those who are the right fit (academically, athletically and socially). And I believe we do.

GPA in my opinion. It's my thought that if a kid has made 3 visits to Ohio State, seen some of the best atmospheres we have ever had to offer, and seen our school and facilities yet still needs selling, JT may have seen that the fit just wasn't flush. I think this one came down to leaving home because I have no doubt that Lamarcus feels Ohio State is a fine school and possibly his best career decision. Seems like he went with what was comfortable and I'm sure JT is glad he did so now, rather than jumping ship 2-3 years in.

In the few years I've been following recruiting, if we're in on a kid that has Florida State mentioned in the mix, I don't count him as part of the class until the NLOI is faxed in. I have no proof but I'm convinced that FSU coaches have recruits play games with opposing coaches and with recruiting news guys. Too many FSU recruits suddenly get religion on NLOID or late in the process for it to be just a bunch of kids that are truly torn.

You have to keep in mind we are in OHIO. Look at the programs that are annually successful. Florida,USC, Texas, Alabama, LSU. What is the difference between us and them. Its hard to nationally recruit to the state of OHIO.

I think your premise is refuted by reality. Sure, our in-state recruiting is premium; however, I don't see us suffering on the national scene nor do I consider Ohio State to be unsuccessful annually. Maybe it's a difference in expectations between you and me.

That usually happens when a kid calls for a commitment. JT goes into his speech about what a commitment means, and so on. That's why we don't have decommitments. We always recruit until the final hour.

We lost a recruit who decided to play for his childhood favorite. It is easy to promise the kid the world now because there is nothing there to refute.

Great talent and I am sure he will do great for the 'Noles but I agree that some of his comments make me think he will be a better fit at Free Shoes University.
