Lamarcus Joyner (DB New York Jets)

I think it's pretty simple. We offered LJ first and Riggs is the only other CB we have offered that we know of. There are some good prospects in state and nationally that many fans want to see offered in case. However, OSU offered LJ first, meaning he is our guy. Since LJ is very interested in us, we will pursue hard. I think the main thing to keep in mind is that JT is so team oriented, that he will not try to pretend that the team hinges upon LJ becoming a Buckeye. However, he will make it known he wants LJ to be a Buck and become part of the family. He will also focus on making LJ NFL ready and another floridian all-american Buckeye corner, but also he will focus on making him a better person and show genuine care towards his goals and growth in life, no matter what blunders or triumphs he has. THAT is what JT sells and promises, not questionable things like playing time, constant attention, and jersey numbers. If LJ is all about team/family, competition, and becoming a better person on top of a better player, he will love JT's approach. From what it sounds like, he is, so there should be no issues.

is LJ gonna be the #1 corner in the 2010 class? and do you guys think he would be a 5 star?

1) If he doesn't commit until signing day, very strong possibility
2) Yes

Keep in mind that I'm not great with film, but he looks pretty ridiculously good, and the comments from the respected film-watchers on BP are impressive.

/hopes I don't look like an idiot

but if the chatty female openly expresses her interest in you the same way multiple times every day, that seems like it would get old rather quickly.

Also, the chatty chick is telling anywhere from 35 to 60 of your friends how much she likes them too.

I seriously doubt the staff meant LJ could play "any position he wanted". I feel it's safe to assume they thought he would "want" to play corner or safety.

Um, why? JT's "style" resonates with some kids, and it doesn't with others. And that "style" is JT - what a recruit sees from JT and staff during the recruiting process is what the player will actually get when he arrives on campus. JT & Co. are not going to put on some act just to impress a recruit. It's best to be open and honest up front, rather than have the kids find out that they've been "misled" down the road.

JT "works" his way, other coaches "work" their own different ways. As I said above, some kids (like David Durham for example) love the way that JT works, but not every recruit will be so enamored of JT's approach. Different strokes....

JT is not "aggressive" and "intense" in the way that you are talking about, but in a much more quiet and subtle way. Again, his approach works for some, but not for all. No approach has universal appeal....

Tressel goes about recruiting in a classy way, Im definitely not saying we should resort to pressuring or forcing the issue with any recruit, like some other schools. But If you look at top targets such as Pryor, our staff clearly realized that this recruit needed to have consistant attention to believe how much he was really wanted. With how much our staff focuses on individual prospects, opposed to mass offerings, we should have the time and resources to comfortably give each individual recruit the time they desire and require. I just think it would be a shame if we were to lose a great kid and great talent like LJ because its being percieved that we arent trying hard enough. We dont need to put on any act, we just need to talk to him regularly and make him feel like we really care about him as a person.

Terrelle Pryor initiated most of the communication with the staff through his recruitment. Also, the Brew Crew was in full swing. Pryor noted during his recruitment that he respected tOSU's approach as it was not overbearing and constant pressure like other schools.

What Grad said.

So you are saying that Jim Tressel, the head coach of the Ohio State University, one of the most successful and respected coaches in college football, should alter his whole approach to recruiting just because some eighteen year old kids, for whatever reason, demand more attention? Okay, you are entitled to your opinion, I guess, but please let us know just how grand the spectacle should be before it is sufficient to show "love"....

You know, all of that "recruiting love" stops the minute that the kid signs his LOI, at which time he becomes an indentured servant to the school of his choice. Tressel's approach is far better - form real relationships from the beginning, so that there are no rude awakenings when the kids find out that the "love" was never real.

That's exactly what Tressel tries to do ... but bombarding a kid with form letters and spam texts isn't really the best way to show a recruit that you "care about him as a person", now is it. JT does it his way, and if that way doesn't strike a chord with a particular kid during the recruiting process, then that is pretty solid evidence that the kid would not be happy at Ohio State for the next four years of his life.

LJB said it perfectly, and cdiddy is right too. If Lamarcus is just looking for someone to text and call him a lot, and taking that as his sign of how much the coaches really care about him then Ohio State isn't the school for him. Ohio State Coaches will not pressure him constantly and will not FORCE LJ to talk to them. However, I guarantee, if LJ looked deeper than just calls and texts, he would find out that Ohio State has a real love and a real relationship for its recruits and players. They don't just show you love by calling and texting more, and personally I think that if you relying on calls and texts to determine who cares about and wants LJ more then you are taking the wrong approach. He's got to look for the right match for him, where the coaches truly care about him and don't have to show that through simply calls and texts. Anybody can write more letters, make more calls, and send more texts, but it's the people who actually take time to form a relationship who you should be more interested in. And the fact that Ohio State is one of the most selective schools and sends out fewer offers than nearly everyone should show you a lot more than a few extra letters or calls. Not to mention that LJ was the first corner that we offered and the only other corner we offered is on his team!

If this is a kid that needs to "feel the love" then Tressel's program most likely will not appeal and vice versa.

Pretty simple formula.

And no amount of pleas from posters to increse "love" will have any impact.

So true.....HC Jim Tressel is VERY SELECTIVE with offers.

I think out of the 56 allowed official visits....HC JT Used about 32/33 of them and landed 25 prospects......not bad.

At this time....HC Jim Tressel has extended an offer to Joyner....that's all that can be done for now.

It's amazing how the "love" is OVER once the Letter of Intent is signed......and it's back to the bottom of the totam pole they go.
