Ohio State women fall to Purdue
Friday, February 8, 2008

AP SPORTS WRITER

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? Purdue gave its NCAA tournament hopes a much-needed boost.

FahKara Malone scored a career-high 23 points, and Purdue beat No. 19 Ohio State 68-67 to remain in a tie for the Big Ten lead Thursday night.

The win was important because the Boilermakers (13-10, 9-3 Big Ten) hadn't beaten a ranked team this season. The Boilermakers started the season 6-8, and hit rock bottom with a 100-50 loss to Connecticut, one of their three losses to top-10 teams.

Malone said the experience against the best teams in college basketball is paying off now. Purdue has won four straight, and is 7-2 since the loss to Connecticut.

"This is a testimony to that first half of the season, playing all those ranked teams, playing all those tough teams," she said. "It definitely just prepared us for the most important part of the season, which is conference."

Women's basketball: Boiling Boilermaker uses anger to sink OSU

Friday, February 8, 2008 3:08 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- FahKara Malone didn't like having her pocket picked. Stripped of the ball three times in the first half by Ohio State sophomore guard Shavelle Little, Malone answered with a clutch 23-point performance to lift Purdue to a 68-67 victory last night and knock the 19th-ranked Buckeyes out of a first-place tie in the Big Ten women's basketball standings.
Malone's sharpshooting and energy helped the Boilermakers (13-10, 9-3) erase a 14-point first-half deficit and slip past the Buckeyes (17-6, 8-4) in the final minute.
A competitive light turned on for the sophomore guard as soon as Little took the ball away from her early in the first half.
"It made me very angry," Malone said. "I'm not going to lie. She had long arms. She did a great job on me. But it definitely made me angry and made me want to go after their team and get some buckets on offense."
She responded by hitting 5 of 7 attempts from behind the three-point line. The biggest occurred with 1:24 remaining and the Buckeyes leading 65-63. The shot set up a wild final minute.

Tough, tough loss. But what a game...exciting start to finish.

It was a very physical game and I think we were on the short end of several "no-calls".

Lavendar came out on fire, but I think she wore down late first half, then the physicality of the game play kept her out of rythum the rest of the way, even though she still scored in batches. (I thought she could have taken a charge on Purdue's last possesion, but she bailed out instead). Still a great game by her, and I can't imagine how good she's going to be after all is said and done.

Little was a thief! Man! she can pick a pocket!!!

The inconsitancy on this team kills them (seems very similar to the Men's squad) but with the youth on this team, I can't wait until next season (not to give up on this one mind you)...and the next...etc. The future is very bright for the Lady Bucks.

Despite the loss, it was a very fun game to watch! Get 'em next time, ladies! :osu:

Losing Star Allen killed this team IMO...
While I agree that losing Starr Hurt the Lady's team, I think the fact that we do not have a consistent outside shooter hurts the team even more. Packer is a good shooter but is not very consistent as was evident in the Purdue game. I was thinking that Treb... was going to be that answer when she transferred from UCLA. I thought she would be a better outside shooter said she was a Parade All-American.

Ohio State women
Buckeyes look to turn corner in road game

Sunday, February 10, 2008 3:12 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For 11 minutes on a freaky Thursday night in Mackey Arena, identities switched for the Ohio State women's basketball team.
Seniors Marscilla Packer and Tamarah Riley morphed into cheerleaders on the OSU bench while little-used freshmen Alison Jackson and Sarah Schulze ignited a rally against Purdue that nearly produced a come-from-behind victory.
The outcome -- a 68-67 Big Ten defeat -- knocked the Buckeyes (17-6, 8-4) out of a first-place tie in the conference with the Boilermakers and Iowa. How the players respond at 4:30 p.m. today when the Buckeyes face Wisconsin (11-10, 4-7) in the Kohl Center could have major playing-time implications for the rest of the season.

? Where: Kohl Center
? TV: ESPN2
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 17-6, 8-4 Big Ten; Wisconsin 11-10, 4-7
? Matchup to watch: Rebounding continues to be a major issue for the Buckeyes, especially when an opposing player is crashing the offensive boards from beyond the free-throw line. Wisconsin guard Jolene Anderson is one of the best in the conference in that regard. Somebody has to put a body on her and backcourt mate Janese Banks.
? Noteworthy: The Buckeyes won the first meeting 79-74 in Columbus on Jan. 20 but have lost three consecutive conference road games. Anderson leads the Big Ten in scoring at 20.5 points per game. ... OSU freshman Jantel Lavender scored a career-high 30 points in the 68-67 loss Thursday at Purdue. She is the leading freshman scorer in the country at 17.4 points. The Buckeyes have missed 12 of 18 free throws over the past two games.

OSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
OHIO STATE 80
WISCONSIN 77

Adversity inspires Buckeyes to dominate second half

Monday, February 11, 2008 Associated Press
Madison, Wis. -- Ohio State women's basketball coach Jim Foster wasn't sure who he was looking at when he walked into the locker room at halftime of the Buckeyes' game Sunday against Wisconsin.
Facing an 11-point deficit, the squad sure didn't look like the No. 19 team in the country, or one that's in the thick of the Big Ten Conference race.
"We had a discussion. It wasn't profound," Foster said. "This game was going to determine our character and who we are, and it's going to determine our seniors' legacy."
@StoryAd
Senior guard Marscilla Packer took the message to heart, as she scored 16 of her 23 points in the second half as the Buckeyes roared back and held on for an 80-77 win.
Buckeyes guard Shavelle Little sank two free throws with 18.8 seconds left, and Wisconsin's Jolene Anderson, the Big Ten Conference's leading scorer, missed two 3-pointers in the final five seconds.

Women's Basketball
Halftime talk spurs OSU to win over Badgers

Monday, February 11, 2008 12:03 AM
By Jim Massie

The Columbus Dispatch
MADISON, Wis.?At the end of the game, when a second, last-ditch three-pointer by Wisconsin standout Jolene Anderson harmlessly clanged off the rim, the Ohio State women's basketball team should have broken into the first verse of Amazing Grace.
In the second half, the Buckeyes went from woefully lost to suddenly found while overtaking the Badgers 80-77 and keeping alive their Big Ten title hopes yesterday afternoon in the Kohl Center.
In the game's first 20 minutes, the 19th-ranked Buckeyes (18-6, 9-4) looked destined to absorb their fourth consecutive conference road loss. That OSU team had 11 turnovers, nine fouls and a 42-31 deficit to talk about in the locker room.
The discussion, coach Jim Foster said, didn't include raised voices or recriminations.
"It wasn't profound," he said. "It wasn't loud. Essentially, who are we? This game is going to determine our character and who we are. It's going to determine our seniors' legacy. I don't think we liked who we were in the first half. To their credit, they stepped up."

OSU women's basketball: Back to basics vs. Purdue
Buckeyes plan to pay attention to 'little things' that let prior matchup get away
Monday, February 18, 2008 2:51 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Little things dominate the larger picture of an Ohio State women's basketball practice these days in the subtle manner of brushstrokes in a landscape painting.
"We're changing things as we go," OSU coach Jim Foster said. "We're tweaking to the talent on hand. This has been a lot of fun. Not every player wants to be coached. Just ask those NBA (coaches)."
The Buckeyes (18-6, 9-4) have reached mid-February in contention for a fourth consecutive conference championship with the two top contenders coming to Value City Arena this week. They play host to Purdue (14-11, 10-4) at 7 tonight, and Iowa (18-8, 11-4) comes to town Thursday.

? Where: Value City Arena
? TV: ESPN2
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 18-6, 9-4; Purdue 14-11, 10-4
? Matchup to watch: The focus remains on the backboards for the Buckeyes. Opponents' offensive rebounds and second-chance points have hurt OSU all season. Purdue has long, athletic post players and a penchant for coming up with the ball in critical situations. The Buckeyes, particularly the guards, are going to have to put a body on somebody all night.
