Lady Bucks Basketball Thread

What the hell, Big 10 Network?

:smash:

A damn shame this game isn't on.

Looks like the Big Ten Network is showing a women's gymnastics contest between MSU and Illinois tonight from 6 to 8 Eastern, followed by the women's basketball game between Penn St. (4-10, 13-13) and Illinois (6-8, 14-11).

I'm wondering if they're obligated to show every women's basketball team at least once in a conference game (football had that provision).

That could be but having said that the Ohio State women have been on the Big 10 network quite a few times this year compared to other teams. Not making excuses for showing gymnastics over basketball with my apologies to all those gymnasts out there.

And herein lies the inherent problems with a conference TV network. No one can watch this crucial match up because the channel is showing gymnastics (not that I'm condemning that). Can't show it "nationally", won't show it "locally"

A shame.

It's looking good for them to be all alone in first place after tonight.

54-37, tSOU with 11:30 left.

And now a 12-4 Iowa run makes it 58-49 with 7:30 left.

It's now 65-54 Buckeyes with 3 minutes left.

It's a final - congrats to the women on the 69-56 win.

Women's basketball: Buckeyes take control of race

Ohio State senior Marscilla Packer tries to work a shot around Iowa's Stacy Schlapkohl in the first half.

The magic moment arrived with 7:40 to play last night in Value City Arena. The Ohio State women's basketball team, in control all evening in a Big Ten showdown against first-place Iowa, had run into a rough spell.
The Hawkeyes had carved 10 points off a 19-point deficit and Buckeyes coach Jim Foster called a 30-second timeout to calm whatever frayed nerves might exist. It turns out, none existed.

OSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Buckeyes in familiar place - first

Friday, February 22, 2008 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- It's just like 2007. And 2006. And 2005.
With a 69-56 victory over Iowa on Thursday, Ohio State's women's basketball team, the three-time defending Big Ten champion, took over sole possession of first place in the conference with three regular-season games remaining.
"They reloaded," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said after losing to the Buckeyes for the second time this season. "They lost a lot from last year, but they just keep bringing them in, and that's what good programs do."
@StoryAd
While the OSU men's basketball team, coming off two straight Big Ten titles, continues to struggle with inconsistencies late in the season, the Buckeye women are clearly on an upswing after beating the two teams above them in a four-day span. No. 20 Ohio State (20-6, 11-4 Big Ten) controls its fate with a lead in the standings on 11-5 Iowa and 10-6 Purdue.
The Buckeyes finish with games at Indiana (8-7 and tied for sixth in the conference); at Penn State (4-11 and in 10th); and home against Northwestern (0-15 and last).

Women's basketball: Buckeyes start final week on road to title

Monday, February 25, 2008 2:52 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

For Big Ten women's basketball teams, the road this season has been as foreboding as a walk in the deep, dark woods imagined by the Brothers Grimm. Ogres and brambles abound.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, nobody in the conference sports a winning road record, including first-place Ohio State.
To capture a fourth consecutive Big Ten championship, the 20th-ranked Buckeyes (20-6, 11-4) must see what is lurking around the next corner in stops at Indiana and Penn State before finishing Sunday in Value City Arena against last-place Northwestern.

INDIANA women 69, no. 18 OHIO STATE 61 OT
Eight-game win streak vs. IU over

Associated Press

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? Jamie Braun scored 19 points, including two clinching free throws with 39 seconds left in overtime, to help Indiana beat No. 18 Ohio State 69-61 on Monday night, Feb. 25.
The Hoosiers (16-12, 9-7 Big Ten) snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Buckeyes (20-7, 11-5) and avenged a 71-59 loss at Columbus last month, when Braun scored a season-high 25 points.

This time, Indiana had a huge advantage in free throws but couldn't put Ohio State away in regulation.
Two foul shots by Kim Roberson gave Indiana a 54-52 lead in the final minute of regulation, but a layup by Jantel Lavender with 29 seconds to go tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Women's basketball: Road leads Buckeyes into pothole again

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 3:09 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With 6:47 remaining in the game, the Ohio State women's basketball team looked like it would be safe away from home for one of the few times this season. The 18th-ranked Buckeyes led Indiana 52-42 and appeared one step closer to wrapping up a fourth consecutive Big Ten regular-season championship. Then the roof, with a healthy push from the Hoosiers, came toppling down on their heads.
A little more than 11 minutes later, OSU coach Jim Foster was left with a 69-61 overtime loss that pointed his team back to square one on dealing with adversity on the road.
The Buckeyes (20-7, 11-5) now need wins Thursday at Penn State and Sunday at home against Northwestern to tie up the first seed in the conference tournament.

The Lady Bucks got pushed around a little last night and Jantel had one of her worst games of her young career. I think officiating played a major role in this game but can't blame everything on the non-calls.
