Lady Bucks Basketball Thread

The Lady Bucks got pushed around a little last night and Jantel had one of her worst games of her young career. I think officiating played a major role in this game but can't blame everything on the non-calls.
We had a 10 point lead late in the second half and we made one maybe two field goals the last seven plus minutes of the game. Women's basketball officiating is brutal, you know that going into every game. Given the above facts they have nobody to blame but themselves, they were aweful down the stretch and they deserved what they got.

I was reading on the Ozone and they were talking about an Indiana player having a lane violation when the score was 52-51 in Ohio State's favor but the score never changed or was changed and anyhow Indiana got a point or Ohio State lost the point when nothing should have change so the game should have never went into overtime. I was switching channels so I missed something and I really can't understand what they are talking about over there.

I found the explanation

Here is the description from the ozone which I do not understand at all. I mean I understand it but why would the point still count.

Indiana's late second-half rally was also aided by a controversial call on the play that tied the game. With the Buckeyes still leading by one at 51-50, Indiana's Whitney Thomas was fouled with 2:38 remaining and went to the line with a one and one. Thomas made the free throw, but the officials ruled there was a lane violation the play, nullifying the shot and therefore did not award her a second shot. The Buckeyes inbounded the ball after the call, but the point was allowed to remain on the scoreboard to tie the game.

I was wondering why they still got that point as well when I was watching. There must've been a logical reason because nobody from Ohio State complained, or maybe our staff didn't even notice which is a whole other problem. The score was actually 52-51 at the time, the ozone may want to get their facts straight. Oh well, that wasn't the reason we lost.

OSU women's basketball
Buckeyes victims of scoring goof
Disqualified free-throw miscue set up loss in OT

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As the result of a scoring error, the Ohio State women's basketball team took a trip into overtime Monday night at Indiana that might not have been necessary.
The 18th-ranked Buckeyes wound up with a 69-61 loss to the Hoosiers that left them tied for first place in the Big Ten with Iowa.
The Women's Basketball Officiating Consortium reviewed the play and ruled yesterday that the Hoosiers had a point added to their score after a disqualified free throw with 2:38 remaining in regulation.
Contacted in State College, Pa., last night, Ohio State coach Jim Foster kept his feelings in check about the situation.
"We asked the referees," Foster said. "One of my assistants asked why they added a point and we were told it was taken care of."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The flight home from Bloomington, Ind., on Monday night would have suited a dormouse or a librarian better than a group of college athletes.
"It was quiet," Ohio State senior guard Marscilla Packer said.
The 18th-ranked Buckeyes boarded the plane with their lips zipped after losing 69-61 in overtime to Indiana. The loss allowed Iowa to tie OSU atop the Big Ten women's basketball standings with two games remaining.
"I'm glad we get to play again this soon," Packer said a half-hour before boarding a charter plane for State College, Pa., yesterday. The Buckeyes (20-7, 11-5) meet Penn State (13-15, 4-12) tonight.

7 p.m. today
? Where: Bryce Jordan Center
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 20-7, 11-5; Penn State 13-15, 4-12
? Matchup to watch: Indiana used defensive pressure to erase a 10-point OSU lead with under seven minutes to play and went on to a 69-61 overtime victory. Look for Penn State to attack sophomore point guards Shavelle Little and Maria Moeller and make it tough for the Buckeyes to get into their offensive sets.

What's amazing is that supposedly the scoring error was "correctable until the end of regulation". It's surprising that none of the coaches made a bigger deal about it, forcing the referees to review the scoring. Foster was quoted as saying that they asked a ref about the point (presumably shortly after the violation was called), and were told that "it was being taken care of", or something like that.

I have no idea. Sometimes I wonder about Foster. He shows no emotion on the sideline that almost seems philosophical during the games. There is no shoes for this to happen especially if they noticed it and still let it ride. The Ohio State coaches should have made the officials go to the scoring table and make sure the score was correct. I mean can't they see the scoreboard. Very frustrating!

They won a close game at Penn State tonight, 87-84.

They're now looking good to claim at least a share of a fourth straight regular season crown.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

Lavender's 36 points lead Buckeyes to win

Friday, February 29, 2008
From wire reports
Jantel Lavender dominated the paint with a career-high 36 points and 16 rebounds to help No. 18 Ohio State's women's basketball team move a step closer to another Big Ten title by beating Penn State, 87-84, on Thursday night in State College, Pa.
The 6-4 Lavender, one of the nation's top freshmen, scored with ease down low, hustled for rebounds and found open players when she was double-teamed. Her tough, running one-hander in traffic in the lane with 1:47 left gave the Buckeyes an 85-80 lead.
She threw away the ball on an inbounds play with 14.7 seconds left and Ohio State up three to give the Lady Lions a final shot to tie in a tight contest, but Kamela Gissendanner's desperation 3-pointer went wide of the bucket with the clock winding down.
@StoryAd
Marscilla Packer added 18 points for Ohio State (21-7, 12-5 Big Ten) despite shooting 4-of-17. The Buckeyes, seeking a fourth straight Big Ten regular-season crown, can finish no worse than a tie for this year's title if they win their regular-season finale Sunday against Northwestern.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Freshman center Jantel Lavender kept the Big Ten title hopes alive for the Ohio State women's basketball team with a 36-point, 16-rebound performance during an 87-84 victory over Penn State tonight in the Bryce Jordan Center. Lavender scored the final two baskets for the Buckeyes (21-7, 12-5) as they held off a furious rally by the Lions (13-17, 4-13). Penn State had a chance to tie in the final seconds but Kamela Gissendanner misfired on a three-point attempt. Brianne O'Rourke got the rebound but her desperation shot came after time expired.

Women's basketball: Buckeyes maintain good standing

Friday, February 29, 2008 3:10 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Holding on for dear life in the Bryce Jordan Center is nothing new for an Ohio State women's basketball team. So when 18th-ranked OSU outlasted Penn State 87-84 last night, senior guard Marscilla Packer could sigh, smile and savor a win that allowed her team to remain tied for first place in the Big Ten standings with Iowa.
"It was so hard," Packer said. "But it's always hard at Penn State. The last couple of years it's come down to free throws and last-second shots."
The victory followed a now-controversial 69-61 loss in overtime to Indiana on Monday that included a one-point scoring error by the officials in favor of the Hoosiers near the end of regulation. The outcome left the Buckeyes (21-7, 12-5) deflated and without sole possession of first place.
"We're so excited we got a win," Packer said. "We can go home and play Northwestern (Sunday) and hopefully get a win there and have a Big Ten title. We can't think about (Indiana). The one-point thing, yeah, it happened. But we don't think we should have been in that position anyway."
Freshman center Jantel Lavender carried the Buckeyes with a monumental performance that included a career-high 36 points, 16 rebounds and six assists. She was 12 of 14 from the free throw line.
The Buckeyes were lucky that Lavender was unstoppable because Penn State (13-16, 4-13) did not play like a team mired in a nine-game losing streak.
