Gophers hold off Buckeyes

Friday, January 25, 2008 Dave Campbell

Associated Press
Minneapolis- Leslie Knight scored a career-high 33 points to lift Minnesota's women's basketball team past 15th-ranked Ohio State, 79-70, on Thursday night, stopping the Big Ten leader's winning streak at six.
Emily Fox added 16 points and led an aggressive effort by the Gophers (14-6, 5-3) on both ends of the court that brought them within one game of first place in the crowded conference race.
The Buckeyes (15-4, 6-2) roared back to tie the game at 50 with a 16-2 charge midway through the second half following Fox's fast-break, spin-dribble layup stretched the lead to 48-34. Ashlee Trebilcock scored 25 points, and Jantel Lavender (Cleveland Central Catholic) added 21 points for Ohio State.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Ohio State women's basketball team ran out of last-minute Big Ten magic last night in Williams Arena. The 15th-ranked Buckeyes fell behind Minnesota by 14 points early in the second half, rallied furiously to tie the score at 50 but couldn't pull the rabbit, or the win, out of the hat.
Instead, the Gophers rode a 33-point performance by senior forward Leslie Knight to a 79-70 upset victory in front of 5,838 roaring fans.
In rallying to win conference games over Illinois and Wisconsin, the Buckeyes (15-4, 6-2) executed in the closing minutes. This time, the Gophers (14-6, 5-3) simply played better while breaking open a one-point game during the final seven minutes. OSU coach Jim Foster, who played the game without injured sophomore point guard Shavelle Little, complimented Knight but pointed to other problems.

I haven't found anything on her. She is the #1 recruit in OH, if not the whole country. It would be nice to get her to OSU.
Here you go. LSU recruiting

With eight seniors departing the LSU women's basketball team, the Lady Tigers inked eight high school seniors to letters of intent Wednesday on the first day of the early signing period.

Five players tower at least 6-feet-2-inches in what some publications call the No. 3 recruiting class in the country. Only one non-senior, (6-foot-2-inch) Kristen Morris, meets or exceeds that height.

According to Hoopgurlz.com, a women's basketball recruiting Web site, this class includes three five-star recruits - forward LaSondra Barrett from Jackson, Miss., Ayana Dunning from Columbus, Ohio and guard Destini Hughes from Fort Worth, Texas.

Women's basketball: Buckeyes point to defense
Players work on not letting guard down after loss

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The ferocity of the effort that Minnesota senior forward Leslie Knight brought against the Ohio State women's basketball team Thursday night should not have caught the players by surprise. But Knight's 33-point game did stagger the Buckeyes. It also showed freshman forward Jantel Lavender what comes with being part of a team that has won the past three Big Ten regular-season championships.
"I think for (Knight) it was a personal thing with Ohio State," Lavender said. "She wanted to beat our team really bad. It really wasn't expected, but we have to expect the unexpected."

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Heavyweight Buckeyes to test Lady Lions

By Walt Moody

- [email protected]
The Penn State women's basketball team has thrown a couple of haymakers this season against a couple of ranked teams.
But what has coach Coquese Washington worried about her squad is its ability to take a punch, especially when in somebody else?s ring.
?We?re just not handling physical play,? said Washington after Thursday?s 79-52 loss at Wisconsin. ?We?re just not tough enough sometimes. We?ve got to get tougher and we?ve got to have a lot more fight, especially when things aren?t going our way.?
The bad news for Washington is that her club faces the biggest heavyweight in the Big Ten as the Lady Lions (13-7 overall, 4-4 Big Ten) travel to conference leader and 15th-ranked Ohio State (15-4, 6- 2) at 7 p.m. tonight.
The Buckeyes, who have beaten Penn State seven consecutive times, are the most physical team in the league and feature one of the nation?s best freshmen in 6-foot-4 Jantel Lavender. The Buckeyes center is averaging 16.7 points and 10.3 rebounds and is a force around the basket.
?I think she?s the best post player in the conference,? Washington said. ?She?s having a great year. She?s strong and she?s quick. She?s athletic and she can score. She?s going to be a tough matchup for us.?

Lavender?s play is drawing comparisons to Buckeyes standout Jessica Davenport, the Big Ten?s only three-time Player of the Year.

Losing Dunning isn't good. From our own backyard :smash:

Oh well, they will move forward and be great without her.
Foster lost a couple other top 25 caliber players out of Ohio. I don't know if he is limited on scholarships or not. Unsure of how many seniors there are on the team. It was nice of him to take Ronnie Stokes daughter from right here in Gahanna.:)

Believe he only had 2 and with Lavendar already here it was tough for him to pull another post and he went with Stokes and a pg out of NY who is supposed to be very good...

I think what we need to improve on is overall athletic ability, and Stokes was 4th in the 400 last year in the state, and from what I hear the girl from NY is not to shabby her self...
